Skyline / Strawberry snow conditions?

Postby CaptainArgh » Thu Jan 29, 2015 4:55 pm

What are the conditions like out at Skyline or Strawberry right now?

All the first hand reports from the Utah & CO resorts are pretty poor right now (spring mashed potatoes or thin cover & ice). Are the snowkite spots in better shape than the resorts or are they hurting a bit also?

Was trying to put a trip together in a week and was wondering if I should delay it or hope we get something decent out of the weekend storm. I know...the only certainty in a weather forecast is uncertainty...

Thanks!

Strawberry is AWFUL snow conditions and that was as of last Fri/Sat when I was up there.Low snow pack (even lower now since its been 50's in Park City this week..) Cruddy and Crunchy.

I define cruddy as an old snow pack that melts during the day, freezes at night. Repeat. We need a 12 inch storm up there and some colder temps.

I think fernmanus can comment on Sky Line - I haven't been up there yet.

Thanks, skullcandy. (by the way, you guys make awful headphones ;) )

Yeah, sounds like it may be good for a late afternoon session, but that's it until a big dump occurs. ?

Yeah its been another very disappointing winter here in Utah - snow conditions at the ski resorts, as you mention, are in fact terrible. No snow in the forecast and temps in the 40's. Some weird stuff going on here - I can assure you that conditions at Strawberry are garbage, but if you need a fix, you can ride it. Just don't expect any untracked fluffiness... If you like to Glide, thats doable and should be fine if you are ok with looping up the hill skipping over some exposed sage bush from the low snowpack.

We need a good 12-14" dump followed by a cold post frontal blue bird (ahhh 2007 - 2010 I miss you).

The strawb lake may be ok for some ice kiting, but that's not my thing so cant comment. No clue what the ice conditions are.

Howdy Captain. You might want to think about New England or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. That is where the soft snow is. We have been gettin' it on in the Hillbilly here lately. The liquid precip we are getting today is just gonna make the good base we need to start rockin' when it starts to snow again this weekend. Next week is gonna be good. The west ain't goin' anywhere and this might be the opportunity to check out something different. These pics are from the past couple days in Northern WVa. JR

Hey Todd, not my intention to steal the thunder from Utah, but things are not so bad around here. I hit up Lizard Head last weekend. I thought the snow was going to suck but it was pleasantly soft. I had a blast towing my 4yr old boy around on his sled behind me. Face shots yo!
We are poised to get a foot of fresh as we speak. You're welcome to stop over as always

Thanks, Matt! Yup, am scheduled to take a quick run out to S'ton and was hoping for a day or two of snowkiting if time/wind allow. But the forecasts have been so crummy I was thinking of delaying it until later in the month.

The 6+" you're getting now should help the snowkiting terrain for certain!
Maybe not the steep slopes though...

We have a pretty nice snowpack up high and avy danger has even dropped. That's the big advantage to 12k+ vs 9000 feet. It'll be epic again by tomorrow night. The big question: watch the Super Bowl or slay the freshness??? Hope to kite with you when you're out this way

Hey Todd!
Rabbit Ears has also been very good....but the south slopes do look indeed to be primo like Matt is lucky enough to be in the area to enjoy!

Had a nice solo day on Ears Wednesday - snow is plenty deep and had good wind.
