simple. look at the pic above.
that leash is attached to the back of the harness. the other end goes to the chickenloop.
now when you unhook, you're able to perform a hanlde pass (leash goes from your back on the right side of the body ot the c-loop, then you nhandlepass and the leash is on your left side. simply hook back in and pull the leash over yout head to reset).
if you let go, the kite keeps most of its power and flies straight on towards whatever direction it was flying when you let go.
in most cases it flies to the edge of the window and slowly descends towards the water.
the few cases where that does not work properly are the reason why this setup is called a suicide leash.

hmmm... murdoc, you got me confused. isn`t the one above a typical "remote release"? since it has the option of releasing the kite without getting to the bar...

and a suicide leash would be without the option of letting go before you draw yourself to the bar.

a remote release leash allows you to depower the kite and still stay connected to it while dangling from the leash.
check x-shooter.com for their remote system.

Actually I ride fixed and the leash goes to the fifth line. You can also hook it to re-ride type bars if you have no fifth line. I never ride suicide.

Oh and I didn't vote in the poll because I find all the terminology confusing.

So, the way I see it now is:

A suicide leash is one that is used for doing
handle pass tricks in case the bar is lost during the
transition (while unhooked from the C-loop) the
suicide leash will keep the kite connected to the
rider by holding onto the C-loop. Some power would be
removed from the kite if the bar is dropped because the bar
is allowed to slide up the C-lloop, thus depowering it.

Do I have it right?

I suppose one can also connect such leash to the kite leash,
but for a dropped bar (during hadle pass) it would result in kite
always dropping to the water, requiring a water relaunch.

that really looks german depowered means flagged out if there is no 5th line? i thought bows depower when let go, but all you need is an x-shooter leash

yes, you got it.
some riders manage to land a failed handlepass by retrieving the bar while still in the air.

@reinis:
i gets a little confusing . . the remote release depowers the kite a little when you let it go, same as a suicide leash does.
now when you pull that red ball, the kite depowers completely, flares out and falls down, attached to it's specific safety-leash.

Suicide all the way unless I'm sailing alone then during launch and land only I switch to the 4line safety conection
