how do you water launch safely

Postby crack » Wed Mar 10, 2004 5:43 am

I've seen many riders launch from the water, ie: place the kite on the water, let it drift downwind, move to the side so that when the lines get tension & wind takes hold you can move the kite to the edge of the window.

looks really safe as if you're going to be lofted you're already in the water.

but what do you do with the lines?

-do you drag onlong the ground to water - could get tangled
-do you wrap them up around the bar - but then you quickly need to unwind so that you don't get tension on the lines.

anybody shed some light?

this is what i hate about some of the people on this forum.all criticism and no help or explanation for these problems. if you want to launch this way, you should check out the turbo launcher. they even have a video for this kind of launch. the only thing is where do you put it after the lines or all out. throw it on the beach and hope no one steals it, i don't know. as for you idiots who critisis and come up with no solution, i hold you responsible for all the accidents and beach closures.we need to educate if we want to see this sport progress. wear your helmet and be aware of the people around you. google the turbo launcher.

you prewind your lines into a bucket so that when your kite floats downwind on the water the lines unwind properly. If you have a friend in a boat then get them to watch the lines unwind when the kite floats away so that if any kinks begin they can grab hold and fix the kinks before they become knots.

you start by putting the lines closest to your bar into the bucket and circling the rest of the lines around the edge of the inside of the bucket until the ends of the lines are on top. then when the kite floats away the lines get pulled off in a circular motion out of the bucket. no tangle. no hassle.

And just before you do that, be sure to yell: "Hey, guys...watch this!"

Although having a helper remains the best option we have a few spots around here where we have to lauch in the water. The water is getting close to 10C right now and it is getting tougher to get people to come in the water to help us launch. I do it when the wind is not strong (10 to 15 knots) but some guys do it in 30 knots.

If you walk to the water with your line undone be careful not to walk in them. It is the best way since you will walk upwind and nothing will get tangled. The other way is to secure your kite by attaching the leash to the pump loop on the LE and undo you lines in the water. Make sure you walk upwind. Never walk in those lines and make sure you undo themso the bar does not go through the line. Once undone, Hook in and attach your safety in a safe manner...no suicide here. When you drift the kite it needs to have the LE into the wind with a slight angle so one tip catches some wind.you can walk backwards into the wind to speedup the drift and minimise the chances of messing up. once the kite is downwind, the lines mabe twisted so turn the bar accordingly. Once all seems clean, just take off. Again it is a very impressive manoeuver when done in 20-30 knots with chop. I do not recomend it. A good thing is to hire an instructor to learn it in the conditions you want to use it in. In an hour class you will be able to do it 4-5 times with supervision. best invested money in my book. If you have a beach it is much safer, you put the kite at the waters edge, strect the lines, turn the kite around and take off.
