It might be a good idea to first dig a hole so that the top of the rod would not stick up above the level of the sand. A rope could be tied to the ring on the rod and have another ring tied to the end of the rope that sticks out of the sand, for the self-launch system.

I don't like the idea of a rod sticking out of the sand. We always completely buried our "dead-man" anchors in the sand, with only a rope sticking out... nothing to trip over or snag on.
