I have a trip planned for costa rica and nicauragua. I want to surf and kite at as many places as possible, will i need a 4wd or will a 2 wd do the job, at least 90% of the time.

We went to CR in Feb, and cant wait to go back. I would recommend a 4 wd. You can get by with just a 2wd but only if your staying in tourist towns and on main roads. Most of the roads even the main road have tons of potholes and alot of them are gravel. CR is a great place, have a great trip. :D
