Puerto Rico and Holbox travel

Postby SLOKITER » Sat Feb 02, 2008 7:45 am

Can imtermediate kiters ride at Shacks at Isabella or at least a couple spots near there? We are trying to put an old college reunion crew together and some surf and some kite and would love to accomodate everyones needs?

Is Holbox island near Cancun as good as it sounds for kiting and few gringos?

I went to Holbox some years ago.
Then all beaches were open to ride at. Now they closed some like Isla de Passion, which was an awesome spot to ride at.
Still, in front of the hotels or at the point further east (boat access, pay fee) you can still ride.
For kiting there are better places in the world, but for sure Holbox has a nice ambiance and also an awesome wildlife. I was kiting with dolphins...

Holbox is a 3 hour drive from Cancun.

You might want to consider Cozumel. The surfing is OK, but the kite boarding is great.

I can get you a deluxe house on the beach at the Country Club that will sleep up to 15.
Kite right out front.

Lots of other rental options.

5 minutes from the airport and town.

I was at Shacks about a month ago and it is not really that friendly. You are to get in the water and launch on top of some exposed reef. After that you are to stay upwind of some other exposed reef if you dont want to run aground on the fire coral. Also, when coming in you should land/crash your kite on the beach and ditch the rig and swim up wind(depending on the direction) to where there are not urchins all over the rock.

Other than that. The waves are great and the people are friendly.

Overall, if you can stay upwind comfortably you should be ok, but i think montanas would be better for an intermediate.
