Hi all,
I'm planning to spend a week in Player del Carmen in January and am having trouble finding reliable info on kiting in the area.
Does anyone know what the kite scene is like there?
What wind strengths/conditions should I expect?
Where to stay thats good for both kiting and non-kiting activities?
I've seen there is a kite school on the beach there that run day trips to a lagoon, has anyone done one of these?
Any other tips or advice would be greatly appriciated.
cheers

Playa is not a great kite destination, winds aren't often favorable in January. The "lagoon" is Isla Blanca which is about 25 minutes north of Cancun. A great place to kite in most wind directions, easy access from Cancun but a fairly long trip from Playa del Carman

I go almost every year to the Maya Riviera with the family in January/February.
I had one trip which was 6/7 days of wind - mainly upper teens to some low 20s. Mainly used my 12M but some 10M sessions as well.
Two trips had 2/7 days of wind 12-14M conditions.
Windfinder/ wind guru have pretty accurate forecasts so you can check before you go.
If you want to stay close to the lagoon there are a couple of hotels north of cancun that are really good but a little pricy- The Beloved Hotel - nice long empty beach so I kited just infront of the hotel never went to the lagoon.
But if there is wind you can kite in Playa too.

I agree with saildawg was in Tulum last year and when there was no wind, everyone got in the car at dawn and headed to Isla Blanca.

Thanks for the info
Sounds like it'll be light wind at best... Might consider taking a 17-12 combo, and be prepared for some day trips to the lagoon.
Or hire some gear if there is wind?

Sorry guys you are kinda off except sail dawg. If a front passes can be 30 to 35 knots, but can also be good for 12mtr and at worse some light wind days for a 15 or 17. Bring all the kites you have room for. If room is no issue I would bring 9,12,15. I lived there for more than ten years so I know the conditions a little. Wind direction will definitely control what spot is best. To get the most out of your trip rent a car if you can. Easy and safe to get around with GPS. PM me if you want my email I will be there when you are there I can tell you where might be best.
