Japan: north of Tokyo (northern Honshū) in July

Postby kainaber » Tue Jun 02, 2015 3:04 pm

Hi guys,

I'm an advanced kiter (kiting since about eight years), and I'll be visiting Japan in July & August for three weeks with my wife. Of course I'd like to bring my kite equipment with me, and I love travelling countries bringing my kite along, just kiting wherever it's possible. I don't need fancy hotels and kiting in board shorts to have fun.

However, it's really hard to find information about kiting in Japan, especially in the summer months. I guess if I'd speak Japanese that wouldn't be so much of an issue, but I don't. :-?
I did a few hours of research and it seems that southern islands like Okinawa, Ishigaki, Kohama are great spots, but only in winter, and no wind at all in summer.
I'm also not so happy in extreme humidity and high temperatures, so from what I read I'd need to go north of Toyko for that, to Tōhoku, Kantō, Chūbu or maybe even Hokkaidō.

I would be very greatful for hints to where it may be windy in summer in northern Japan, also which winds to expect (which kites to bring, wet suit recommendations), or if that doesn't make sense at all to bring my kite equipment.

Thanks!
Regards from Vienna,

Kainaber

Kitesurfing has a pretty small but dedicated scene in Japan with a lot of crossover from snowboarding and surfing. I know some of the Japan kite crew but they are based around Kanto (near Tokyo) and ride exclusively in Chiba/Shonan or live in Osaka and only ride Nagoya/Aichi. Your best bet may be to either email the JPKA(jpkatour@gmail.com) directly or post on their Facebook page. Alternatively, try 'surfinginjapan.com'(dane@surfinginjapan.com) or post on their Facebook page they may be able to help you connect with the right people. Best of luck and enjoy your trip.

Just letting you know that I'm having a great time in Japan! Only got to kitesurf once so far, near Hamamatsu, but that was really something! Nice 1m waves. Here's a short video:

Seigo Akado from Les Ailes Co.Ltd(Slingshot Japan) was also really helpful and pinpointed a few additional spots in Japan for me on Splocs.com: http://locations.splocs.com/kitesurf/country/Japan.html

Here is another helpful site for Tokyo (in German):

Best, kainaber
