I booked flights from Finland to Fortaleza Brazil from TAP Portugal because their baggage allowance was good, 2 x 32 kg + hand luggage.
All went good until I was leaving Fortaleza. At the check in they asked me do you have kites in your bag? I answered yes. Then they forced me to pay 100€ (~430 reals) before I got the boarding pass.
I had only one luggage which was 25 kg.
I have traveled around the world with many different airlines and I never got charged extra because I have kites/kiteboard in the bag (if I had only one check in luggage).
Usually it doesn't matter if the kitebag is big (it was 140 cm long), if it isn't overweight.
This was my experience from TAP and I won't buy their tickets any more, if they aren't much cheaper than the others.

I'm another disgruntled client.
They asked me at the gate to have my hand-luggage put in the main hold. It did not arrive with me. After a week still waiting for..
- my wallet
- 2 laptops
- smartphones
etc.
Customer service is very poor. Kept waiting on the phone for ages. Never any news. No assistance for the total lack of access to cash !

So funny. Someone in the world has a bad experience. Action. Boycott vendor. That'll teach them. Oh look. Next flight full. Capitalism

well, some see it easy, some not. The maximum size allowed on TAP is 158 or so...means length+width+height.
But, next time don't say kite...just personal belongings...

You'll find that maximum size length+width+height from many other airlines too, but they don't don't care if it is a little bit bigger - if the weight isn't too much.
TAP seems to look at the size (or what's in your bag) - not so good for kite people. This is just a tip if you have a chance to buy flights from other company, you might save money.
edit: I forgot to mention: they showed me a paper where were listed all gear what cause extra payments. There were at least surfboard, kiteboard and wakeboard. So maybe it doesn't matter how small your bag is (ie. split board, of course it's easier to hide), they just hate watersports
