Ryanair sports equipment 2017? "normal" or "large"?

Postby sergei Scotland » Sat Jun 10, 2017 1:32 pm

Hi
Anyone flew with a kitesurfing bag with Ryanair in 2016-2017?
I understand kitesurfing bags are OK with them...
Question:
You can buy "sports equipment" for 30 GBP or "large sports equipment" for 50 GBP (each way).
Would a normal 140-155 * 45 * 30 cm kite bag qualify as normal or large?
I.e. do I pay 30 or 50 each way?

I was chatting on Ryanair instant chat and girl said it is possible that normal is 20 kg while large is 30 kg - she was not sure I think.
I paid 30x2 but not sure if I should have paid 50x2?

Actually she is probably wrong weight is the same for them:
That's what their web sites says here: https://www.ryanair.com/gb/en/useful-in ... entre/fees

Large sports item €50 / £50 €60 / £60 (at the airport)
Fee charged per Item/ Per one way flight. A maximum weight of 20kg per item

Sports equipment €30 / £30 €35 / £35
Fee charged per Item/ Per one way flight. Maximum weight of 20kg per item

The only place where they mention maximum dimensions is this:
For health and safety reasons Ryanair does not accept for carriage any individual item exceeding 32 kilos or with combined dimensions of more than 81cms (height), 119cms (width) and 119cms (depth)

This girl on chat said dimensions are combined i.e. i understand total is 119+ 81 + 119 = 319
My kite bag is 155+45+30=230...
Thanks
Sergei

Anyone? I paid Ryanair for normal sports equipment (30 GBP).
If they are going to charge me for "Large" at the airport that will be expensive (60 quid more)...

Anyone managed to get away with "normal" sports equipment charge recently? Or been hit with large after paying for "normal"...
We all spend money on equipment so are obviously cash0hungry by the time we actually go :-) LOL

I have called up Ryan Air on this twice, both times the person was unable to tell me whether my kit was large or normal sports equipment, which is ridiculous as all other airlines provide clear weight / dimensions. I still never fly with them, it's like they go out of their way to stitch you up. I'd be keen to know how you go.

Hi Guys. Can you tell how did it go at the end with Ryanair as I am flying with them this weekend and I am in exactly the same situation that you were. Thanks

Just got an answer to this on their Live Chat.
"The simple sports equipment dimensions: 119*119*81cm
A sports equipment is considered a large sports equipment if it exceeds any of those dimensions"

Look like we live in the land of LARGE

Any updates from those who travelled?

I had the same problems with clarity from Ryanair via online chat today and this is the only place with a definite answer, it's just not the one I wanted!

I only want to add sports equipment so I can take my board (138cm). We already have 2 x 20kg from the family plus booking so I have enough room for a kite, lines and harness within one of those cases.

Has anyone succeded booking normal sports for just for a board? It would only measure 140 x 50 x 20 at worse.

I took a bag 150 x 40 x 30 as normal sports equipment, however 2 teenage girls at next check in desk to me had turned up a day early for their flight, so they were rather distracted / laughing

Thanks, Qman, much appreciated.

I may just take my kite stuff instead of one of the pre-booked 20kg suitcases. If they charge me at the airport (it will be oversized compared to normal luggage) hopefully I can just pay the difference between standard luggage and sports equipment, or large sports equipment if there are no girls nearby causing a distraction!

Does anyone know if those board bags with Golf written on the side actually work?

I flew with kitesuring-golf bag 20kg on "normal" sports equipment few years ago. No problems. Just stay in 20kg limit because they check :)
