Where to live and kite warm water everyday?

Postby michaljagniatkowski » Wed Sep 20, 2017 5:38 pm

HI,

beginning of 2018 I plan to spend 5 months in a remote tropical location suitable for kitesurfing, what spots would you recommend as worth doing some research on? my main criteria

- good wind, warm water
- stable, decent internet connection,
- would be really good if a place is somewhat developed and busy/touristy as I intend to travel solo and dont want to be stuck in a location thats super quiet and where not much happens

- bonus points if the place is in africa, is beautiful, has amazing wildlife, has waves to surf, has decent visa policy

also, i spent 2 years in asia and 2 in central america so ideally i would want to go somewhere new

my ideas so far

cabarete - seems like possibly it has it all, you can kite you can surf, looks like its quite popular travel destination and can get busy (maybe too busy?), thoughts on that?

looks like there are few other caribbean locations that can also be pretty attractive, barbados? antigua? havent looked much into how life would look in those and other places, if anyone has any experience they can share about carribean in general that would be great

but my dream destination would be somewhere in africa as its a continent i've never got the chance to visit and the wildlife there has to be amazing, the whole place i imagine must feel like a different world. trouble is that some epic kite locations seem like have really not much to offer beside kiting, at least in terms of everyday life. friends recommended me diani beach and paje in zanzibar and after looking up closely these seem very underdeveloped and simple places good for 2-4 weeks kite-intense holiday but could possibly feel boring to someone travelling solo staying there longer. also internet could be shitty
theres also cape town as one of the famous destinations for 'digital nomads' but kiting in wetsuit puts me off, plus they have 30 days visa policy so thats an inconvinience

all ideas and comments are very welcome, thanks

 Langebaan for warm water? You're, joking, right? It might be a bit warmer than CT, but definitely still cold :shake: compared to real tropical water (as in "no-wetsuit-water").

Maybe Kenya is an option? Good wildlife and apparently also some wind around that time of the year (nothing spectacular though).

Well you might be right. But for me Langebaan had warm water - in Shark Bay.

Keep in mind I live in Central/Northern Europe ;)

P.S. Sorry I forgot 30 days Visa for Polish people - seems CT is not an option anyway.

Cabarete is good. Spent about three months there combined. Wind isn't brilliant during the winter, but you will always get wind over a 5 months period. The village and the area around kite beach means you will always be able to find people to hang out with. And I have never had any issue finding decent Internet there.

Gone to Cabarete much for the same reasons as you. You can find better wind and water, but as a total package it is a very good place to go during the European winter if you are looking for some warm weather.

Totally agree with Cabarete! I have been here 6 years after coming for a 30 day vacation. Now I own a kite school and restaurant here on kite beach. As mentioned above, there might be better seasonal conditions, but as an overall package, Cabarete wins at most things. Here is info about the wind season: http://kiteboardingcabarete.com/wind-season-cabarete We have wind 250-300 days per year when there isn't wind there are waves 250-300 days per year, when there aren't either of those the water is crystal clear so there is freediving, snorkeling, scuba, etc. Everything is close to the beach, you don't need a car because public transportation is easy and inexpensive. Lots of food, fun night life, nice mix of locals and expats. If you want to know more about the area, I write tons of blogs for the different hotels here. This is the best one with the most info: www.cabaretecondos.com/blog. Click around and hopefully be amazed. Also feel free to PM me. I'm happy to give insight.

Hi Michael,

haha I know what you're talking about, I love warm destinations as well ;)

Cabarete definitely has been one of my favorite spots in the past, especially during the winter time. It gets pretty crowded during New Year's and Christmas but after that it's fine again. Wind chances in winter are like 50-60% so it won't be windy every day but if you stay there for a longer period it will be fine you will still get enough windy days. I also wrote a spot guide for Cabarete here: http://wakeupstoked.com/kitesurf-cabare ... -republic/

Another amazing spot (but the season ends End of January/beginning of February) is Jericoacoara in Brazil. It has been a small hippie village, all built on sand, and has been growing more and more popular in the last years. You can literally kite in boardshorts! Every day you can take a buggy to a different spot or choose to do a downwinder. Also wrote a super detailed guide with downwind options about Jeri here: http://wakeupstoked.com/kitesurf-jericoacoara-brazil/ Since this year Jeri has glassfiber connection in some pousadas, but make sure to really choose one according to internet connection (there is a facebook group called Jericoacoara Digital Nomads https://www.facebook.com/groups/981128428593660/, they should know about that).

I haven't been there yet but Mui Ne in Vietnam is also supposed to be pretty good, warm water and lots of Digital Nomads go there now so the internet connection should be pretty decent.

In general, if you're interested in kitesurfing and working remotely or having a good internet connection, you could join the facebook group Kitesurf Digital Nomads: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1651245441806236/
