19 will fly in lulls to 6kn with slight input
You will like having the extra power in 8-9 knots
You will be able to hold on comfortably up to 17 knots
It will turn plenty fast enough
You can handle it
Go for it
The sweet spot will be 11-13 knots
Have fun

A good thing about 19m LEI kites is nobody wants them and dealers can’t get rid of that giant crap so you might be able to get one cheap if you decide to waste money

I’m not sure about that. 17 knots means white caps, that’s when I rode 633 wing under 5m Rally last month. For 90kg person it would be a torture to fly a 19m unless they decide to build muscles, ride with a girlfriend on a back or just simply get extra 25% of body fat to cushion it.

I’ve seen people being greedy and selling a medium size guy 19m on two occasions. It sucked for both of them.

I personally flew 19m Contra twice and it sucked. The kite is heavy and slow.

And I rode 11m Rally with a regular Hoverglide H5 foil when two guys, both with 19m Contras couldn’t ride TT at all, just past April. That while another guy had better chances and rode 17m Turbine with a large CrazyFly door

Last year we had a guy on a trip who really needed/used a 19m - a 250+ lbs bodybuilder, a huge guy, whose regular kite for good winds is 14m.

If the 19i is the only kite you fly or fly 90% of the time you get used to it like anything you do a lot. If you are just using it 20% of the time or less it will feel slow and you won’t like it much. How often will you ‘need’ it?

Exactly....and may i add that besides not liking it much... the rider will suck at making it work the way it is supposed to
Kite that size (19) ...with good amount of practice...is fun in lightwind to boost transitions downloops / kiteloops using wide TT or wide strap quad surfb

Also no better way to learn good kite flying than with a LW kite.

Yup, underpowered is a different set of skills
As is overpowered a different set of skills
As is lightwind a different set of skills

Want to be a good safe kiter, learn them all. Besides it vastly increases your fun factor!

I picked up the 19 m Contra as my lower end go to kite for this year. I have been happy with the range and performance. I weigh 84 kg (185 lbs.) and use a variety of board lengths depending on just how light the winds are. You should be happy with the 19 m, I am. It feels/flys like a smaller kite with good turning speed and reasonable bar pressure. I used a 17 m Apollo as my largest, low end kite last year.

Hello,

I need some help:

86-88kg freerider living at a lightwind spot with normally 6-7-8 up to 15-16 knots. I have a TT 145x45.

Should I go for the Cabrinha Contra 17 or 19m?

Thanks a lot

Riding off East End, Grand Cayman about a month ago. Not being too sure about what winds I might encounter, I took the 19 m Contra along with my travel split tt board and was happy with how things worked out.

I have compared turbine 17 with some other brands 17s (not cabrinha though..) and the main thing is that the turbine is bigger, a lot bigger. The 15 turbine is probably more comparable to most brands 17.
I have given the 17 turbine a fair amount of use and really like it. Huge low end, and the high end is still very doable if you use a small/normal board and edge hard, it holds its shape very well and very minimal canopy flap, if any, even on the top end.
Anyway if it saves you money the turbine should be considered.
