Add Zanzibar to the list :)

Postby chris_wenger » Mon Dec 27, 2004 4:31 pm

Middle of december until late January constant 15 - 25 knots :)

Just came back from a 2 weeks trip => 11. - 26.12

Average around 12-15 knots daily => 4 days around 18 - 20 knots. Only 1 day with no kiting :) :) :)

If you go now, there will be one month of winds around 20 knots, everyday

Chris

hate to devolve this cool thread into specifics, but can anyone clarify Cabarete's typical conditions in Feb for me?
I saw a couple votes for Cab being 75%+ kiteable in Feb, and others saying its that percentage only in June-Aug....

firsthand exp anyone?

There's no agenda there let hope with Puclaro-Chile as that is suggesting anyone can come at any time and it is equally good...

sure you're right do you own a school?
Cheddaz, Believe it or no, Puclaro is an incredible place. We don't have a school there, here is a review:

SOUTH AMERICA ---> CHILE --->IV REGION --->LA SERENA ---> VICUNA --->PUCLARO

Here is why:

The Embalse Puclaro is located near the best of the world spot for astronomic porpuses, wish is well known for his clear skyes
http://www.visit-chile.org/activities/astronomy.phtml (chek this out)
And if the sky is clear, the wind is a fact.

Kiteboarding Spot Name: Puclaro (Gualliguaica town)

In the valley there are several cabins, and nice facilities, close by.. (10 min away). The town itself is new, due to a Dam made 5 years ago.

Restaurants and places to go to Vicuña has good fullfiling places... nicer places more touristic, you have to go inside the valley.

Other activities are available for the family Valle del Elqui is recognized to be a very mistic place in Chile. And also is where our national liquor is produce out of grape, so you have several vineyards.
Biking, Ecotourism, horsback riding, trekking are other activities in the area. As well as Astronomic Observatories (some worlwide known!). Valle del Elqui is known for having a micro climate and clear skies everyday!...

Average living cost per day Very cheap. If you stay in the town with the locals...you pay not more than 5.000 pesos (8 dolars) a night.
A nice room in a town close by (if you go with a girlfriend or boyfriend or just a friend)... around 16 dolars per night.
Food is cheap.

Time of the year attended and best time to go THE BEST THING....
IS A ALL YEAR ROUND SPOT!!!! World Class!
Wintertime can get a bit cold, but sunny. Summertime and spring is the best...(Sep through March)

Wind conditions Spring and summer: from 18 to 35+ knots.
Water Temperature from 16-22 °C
Day Temp: 25 - 30 °C
Normal Kite: 8-10 Mt
Wet suit recommended (3/2)

Autum and Winter: from 13 to 20 knots.
Water Temperature from 15-18 °C
Day Temp: 10 - 25 °C
Normal Kite: 14-16 Mt
Wet suit recommended (4/3)

99% wind!!!!!! I'd say is one of the best places in the world...

Beach and the rigging area At the moment The beach area is divided Windsurfers from Kiters (downwards and more open).
Some rocks, no facilities on the beach itself...is actually a rather "rustic" spot in general... it hasnt been exploited yet!! very very soul and mistic...

Water (temperature, waves, chop, etc.):
Flat and Choppy (when windy, you get pretty good chops)

Obstacles to look out for:
The beach is not safe. Is getting better all the time, but need to look out for rocks... Wind on the shore is gusty so waterstart is with body in the water and have to bring the kite rapidly to the other side... That makes it a place not for begginers..

Kiteboarding do's and dont's in area:
Not for first day learning!!

Other information:
Believe me...is a place like no other...
Besides 40-60 minutes away you have the beach...and an excelent spot for high season called Puerto Aldea

kitebeaches will have this feature one day. But now businesses have to support the site, otherwise it can grow.

If you find wrong info on kitebeaches.com, make it your honor to correct them.
Ther is a link in the interactive section below each beach info to submit for that particular beach additional info.

If you only take, that won't help you in the long run.
Make sure to give info to make the site better every day.

Thx
Toby

Kitebeaches wind statistics per month

My pleasure. I'm willing to contribute beyond the spots I posted in kitebeaches.

kitebeaches will have this feature one day
This is the idea:
Till you finilize the feature as you have it in mind, maybe it is possible to add one more field in the left menu on Kitebeaches home page, such as Kitebeaches/month and it will link to a new page showing the data as in the current thread.
I am willing to prepare the page in Word and send it to you (of course as per your requirements).

What do you say?

Great Job Guys !!! but don't forget the Bahamas in winter !!! Jan.-Feb.-March is 15-25 knots 3-4 days a week. The water is still warm (20-22 C.) and if you want you can find super flat water, chop or reef breaks with 7-8 feet surf.

I see that Auckland has been included in the January part. Best wind in Auckland is during spring time and what's more it tends to mostly come from the WSW/west so you can stay at one spot and not need to worry about the traffic (heaps of waves on the west coast at this time of year). Take into account other factors like travel, transport, traffic and local knowledge and I'd advise you guys never to come to Auckland to kite during our summer. Best time to come here is spring (Sep - Dec)... definately not January. If you wanna come to NZ during Jan/Feb etc head to the South Island... lots of wind down there.

In general though NZ has very changeable conditions and i don't recommend including it as a place to travel to for a kitesurfing holiday. There is a hell of a lot of wind here but you'll need to commute around as it tends to change direction from day to day. Springtime here is crazily windy. One more thing.... don't even think of kiteboarding in Wellington. It's a poleboardin place with crazy freakin strong winds that will get you killed... no shit.

If you wanna live here though... NZ bloody rocks for kiting.
