Were to ride? season over?

Postby Wind_Mill » Wed Apr 03, 2013 8:50 pm

Fellow Kiters,

I have had an awesome snow kite season in northern Michigan, but I have been restricted to the frozen lakes. I am hunting some 3d terrain in NW MT, northern Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and BC. Unfortunately, the snow has disappeared where I have been looking.

Any places still Kite-able?

If you can make it down to SW Colorado, we should have some amazing high elevation corn kiting for another month. Park and ride at 12k feet. It my favorite time of the year with some great terrain becoming accesible and avy danger going down. Last year we didn't transition to water until May 15.
Happy hunting!

This time of year its all about elevation. The myriad of park-n-ride options are gone and a sled or willingness to skin up to the goods are key. The Bighorns, Beartooths, Absorokas, Madisons, Skyline, & Colorado high country offers options - you just have to be able to get to them. Skyline & Togwotee Pass, WY are exceptions & @ Memorial Day there's the Beartooth Pass highway which almost always delivers some epic days to park-n-ride snow.

I know it's not as easy, but a change in latitude will get you some great kiting right now too. As you can see from the current photos of the White Pass in the post below, it's prime season up here in AK. Those photos are from BC(almost Yukon), just north of Skagway AK. come on up!

I just had a couple of awesome days at Skyline. If you hurry you'll get some great spring conditions.

Maybe try going north a bit into CAN? Here on the EC I drive about 1.5 hrs north into the eastern townships of CAN and theres not only snow but wind. If not the case in the midwest I suggest toggling over to the kiteSURFing forums and thinking along those lines :naughty:
