Question about the flysurfer 6m viron

Postby robbygk » Sun May 12, 2013 11:02 am

Hey guys,

Was just wondering about this kite, was looking for a good kite that I could teach daughter on in light winds on the water, and as a high wind kite for me on the water?

Any input would be great

I have a 4m Viron. Nice kite for teaching, but needs a bit of breeze to really shine. So, if she is a real light weight, consider a 4m, as a 6m might be too much kite in the winds that any respectable kite likes to fly in. (I am trying to say get the right size kite, dont just hope to use a bigger kite in light winds, as it will make it harder to learn) I also have a 6m Unity. Better option if you are hoping to use it yourself in high winds.

As for the Viron. Simple, probably indestructable, lots of depower and idiotically easy relaunch. You would be hard pressed to find a better 'real kite' trainer.

Has anybody demonstrated kitesurfing with the Viron and staying upwind? In what winds? Flysurfer seems to be advertising mostly it's tolerance for abuse and easy relaunch.

I love FS foils for certain conditions but I think it takes a lot of finesse to get the most out of them and for a beginner that may be frustrating. My 12 y/o won't even consider to fly foils because the low aspect tubes are so much more intuitive to make power. Her favorite kite is a 4m Eclipse nano, And I have stayed upwind on that kite with a big board in 30 knots. I might consider the Epic Junior pro or an Ozone Catalyst in 4 m. The move up to a similar kite in 6 when she is comfortable.

I can hold my ground on the water with my 4m Viron in winds blowing around the low 30kts range, but it is more like an angry bee on a string in those winds. Certainly not a training scenario. I have read upwind with the 6m is not the greatest.

Again, great trainer, fantastic on snow too, but I would consider something else if you are actually planning on doing some high wind water kiting with it. Would likely be just fine for lawn mowing with a lightweight newbie though.

I'm considering getting the 6m Deluxe Edition Viron to teach my son in 8-10 knots winds.

I could also might try using it for snowkiting or fooling around on a SUP.

Viron just looks like the safest of all the kites to learn on and having a small pack down with no pump is a bonus.

I'm curious to hear any feedback from parents that have use it or other kites for teaching young kids.

I just ordered a 6m Viron DLX to teach my 12yo daughter.

Was using a 6m Ozone Catalyst but it's just too fast around the window and needs a bit of work to keep it flying in light winds so we spend more time trying to keep it in the air and relaunching than anything else.

Hopefully the Viron is just what we need. Stable, easy to fly and relaunch, slow turning, no power spikes. Will update once we've tried it out a few times :thumb:
