Magdalen Islands / Îles-de-la-Madeleines Information Wanted?

Postby j_rock » Tue Jul 30, 2013 4:55 pm

Looking to plan a kite vacation to the "Îles-de-la-Madeleines" "Magdalen Islands".

Any information about the

- local kite spots or areas
- accommodations
- time of year for decent winds and water temps
- internet links or websites with kiting info

Any recommendations, stories you can provide about the island or local contacts would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Happy Winds

John

Here's a URL to start:

http://www.localkitespots.com/vmap.aspx ... 5516836471

...and another:

http://www.tourismeilesdelamadeleine.co ... /kitesurf/

From the FAQ:
The archipelago is blessed with a mild maritime climate. At the end of August and in September, the water in the lagoons and bays around the Islands reaches temperatures up to 18 and 21 degrees Celsius. The Gulf Stream, the low tides and the fact that the islands are surrounded by shallows all help keep the water warmer. Water in swimming areas is warmer here than along the shores of the Saint Lawrence or even along North Carolina (USA), and swimming is still a pleasure as late as the end of September!
That's all I got.

Thanks for the links JBDC.

I found those sites as well.

Hoping someone has some personal
experience kiting on the island.

I wrote 3 blogs about my visit to the Maggies.

I really enjoyed it. I think the best time to go is Sept/Oct - after the crowds leave and before it gets too cold.

First 2 weeks of September is my favorite time to get there : always windy, just after tourists, just before duck hunting (which can limit access to lagunas last 2 weeks of September), peak of water temperature.

The number of spots is unlimited! So get there and ask the locals. With any wind directions you can have flat session in shallow water lagunas or a descent wave session.

Forum :
''Kite aux iles'' on Facebook

Local shop:

Ask for Lionel, he knows this place inside out!

PS I second the other comments. I'll be there the first two weeks of September.

I've been there before as well, amazing place and unlimited number of spots for flat water. Pointe aux loup is an amazing slick on west, north-west wind.
I heard the waves session are epic in old harry but we didn't score any east wind while I was there.
