New Guy in Miami with some really old Kites! Help!

Postby HummingPanda » Thu May 01, 2014 3:08 pm

Hey everybody I used to work at a kite/surfshop a few years back and I'm just beginning to pick up kites again (finally) :D
I brought my friend into it and apparently he has a pair ancient 8m Air Bliss hybrid kites. If you think I'm kidding when i say ancient the four plastic (or latex?) tubes running perpendicular to the edges cracked and disintegrated when we pulled them out.
The kites are both brand spanking new and look to have never been flown. Anybody have or heard about these kites? I'll put up pics if ya want

forget those old kites...you will just waste your time and get frustrated!

And in Miami you need a big kite! Normally sub 20 knots.

12-18 sqm depending on your weight.

Do you know how to ride yet? If not, lessons are needed before!

Maybe see you soon at the beach...normally I ride at Crandon Key Biscayne. Sunday looks like some wind...

Hey Humming Panda :bye:

Sorry can't help you with the kites.

Never heard of em.

But 8m is almost useless in Miami, unless your planning a road trip up to Hatteras or your going to pair it with a barge.

As far as the four plastic (or latex?) tubes running perpendicular to the edges they sound like bumpers. If they were kept in a garage I can see this happening. My little piece of frozen north Canadian ingenuity and genius (2008 OR Rise 14m) couldn't handle the furnace like temperature of South Florida and the bladder fused or disintegrated and the seams are coming apart. Loved that kite and one day plan to hand it over to airtime to see what magic they can work.

The advancements in kite tech make it pointless to use those kites. The amount of time and frustration they will cause nullify any savings imo. If you absolutely must put them to work, take them south to Aruba (25-35mph winds daily). Its a cheap direct flight from MIA. Our windy season is about to end due to thunderstorm/lightning (all the wind comes with t-storms in the summer, for the most part - unless we get a tropical storm or hurricane). That is why a previous poster posted that video.

Be aware Miami is abit of a hostile place to learn kitesurfing, although the physical conditions are near ideal. Crandon is wonderful - but heavily regulated. You need to get IKO L3 certified to ride regular there, but you might be surprised how hard that is to get to when first starting out. Lessons are only affordable thru L2 imo for the simple fact you need alot of practice to consistently waterstart, edge, go upwind, jump, transition, etc. (all L3 requirements) Its impossible to do when someone is charging you $100/hr - unless you are a millionaire who can bankroll 40-50 hours, which I doubt since you are recycling ancient kites. The entire process takes a full season, judging from others I have spoken with and my own experiences.

The Keys are currently easier going about it all and a short drive (1-2 hrs) - BUT, the beaches (if you can call them that) are not soft white sand like Crandon and you will need booties.

If you get into it, message me, its always easier with a second person for launch./landing and I go to KB alot. DO take lessons after you get some experience with a trainer flying, body dragging, etc. The early lessons are the most worthwhile imo (safety, gear info, posture/form,tactics.etc.), once you are up and riding at least downwind, Youtube can actually teach you quite abit.

Thanks for all the help guys! I've taken lessons in the past at Miami Kiteboarding in Crandon Park so I know how strict they can be about their regs.
I figured it would come down to getting a new kite, especially since I'm not even sure of these are flyable. I've been training with a 2.5m in 20+mph winds (which is a ton of fun) but I will soon get a bigger kite for the days with lighter wind.
I'll train a bit with an old instructor to get certified as well :D Hope to see some of you guys out on the water soon! :bye:

I am going to kite at Crandon today in the afternoon!
Some wind will come.
I am on a big white/green kite with no graffics, say if you will be around.

Thursday looks line a very good wind day. Don't miss it!
