Diy foilboard

Postby Scuba » Wed May 14, 2014 10:07 pm

Had to make another front & rear wing the last one was to high aspect with only a foil on one side, my friend tried to ride them but advised me to change the shape, thx MT.

Then it worked I could ride about 20seconds at a time.......happy days!!!!

My surf board finally gave up with the constant hammering.........and folded in the middle.
I have finally made a dedicated foil board for my diy foil, loving the foiling on the river it is such an awesome feeling. :D

Happy foiling

Nice setup Scuba, very neat for DIY.
May I ask a question to the Mast - Board attachment and the glass layup on the board...

I'm in the process of building a hydrofoil kiteboard in epoxy vacuum bag construction (no stringer).
My foil attaches via 4 bolts to the board. Right now I'm trying to figure out a way of how to build a solid attachment point into the board. How would you design the attachment point AND how much glass would you lay up top/bottom.

Many thanks,
Flo

G day flo

The board I made is made up of the following:
19mm styrofoam
Cut down the middle to accommodate 2 stringers of 3 mm ply set 40mm apart and cut the stringers to a rocker which you would want to use.

I made a rocker bed to hold the foam whilst gluing the stringers together.

Figure out where you want to mount the foil and remove foam and fit pine instead glueing it on the inside and outside of the stringers

Top and bottom skin is 3 mm ply glued to the foam on the rocker bed with epoxy and vac bag.

Square the rails off ready for the balsa rails 3 x 3/16 glue with wood glue just hold the first layer in place with tape or clamps the all the other layers us locktite 406 instantly bonds

Then 2 layers of 300gsm glass over the whole lot.

End result strong as hell light as f..k!

Bolt the foil down on a solid contact point.

First mounted the foil to a surfboard then altered the strap position etc till it worked then copied the foot strap measurement to the foil to new board so should feel the same as the surfboard.

Hey Scuba, thank you for sharing some knowledge. Getting a good overview on the overall strength requirements through your setup.
Going to open a new tread, purely for the Mast - Board attachment, and it'll be awesome if you could share your thoughts along the way...

Good winds from Perth,
Flo
