that high? just fly :P

Less rotation, more tricks with holding it looooong. Like my Jesus Air, the cover shot of the DVD,

Looks really good! :thumb: I'm really suprised because when I try to jump high on my Blade Fat Lady 17m I go up but not nearly as much as I'm used to with my 14, 9 and 7. I fly a lot more horizontal. I know how to jump big on my other kites.

I also ride a 139x41 board weigh 100 kgs and ride the 17 till about 18knots max.
Is it my board, kite, technique, or do I just need more wind?

Normally I just unhook and mess around with kiteloop transitions, but you really got me interested with the hangtime and the long foot drags.

well, from the data you stated you should be able to hold it longer...so I assume it is technique.
Do you ride slow? because that is key to keep control over the kite...

If yes, then try a smaller board and see what changes for you. I ride 128x39 at 95 kg !

can't jump high in only 18 knots.

The physical limit of jump height is (assuming 20 mph riding speed) is

mph max jump height in feet

10 17
15 21
20 27
25 34
30 43
35 54
40 67
45 81

The point of a big kite is at 15 mph you can get closer to that maximum 21 feet (6 meters) height than with a smaller kite because it is more difficult to extract all the energy with a small kite. Of course it is easier to hold down a smaller kite in high winds. If you are taking the 7 meter out in 40 mph (35) knots you will jump much much higher than a 17 meter in 15 mph (13 knots).

at 25 mph (22 knots) your max jump height is 34 feet (10 meters). That starts to feel like a big jump. But to really sky you want to go out in 40 mph (35 knots) with your 17, and you might get close to (or maybe more than) the max height of 20 meters, that's a line length in height.

you can calculate these sorts of things with 1/2 mv^2 and mgh

Toby probably gets close to the maximum theoretical height thanks to his large kites and good technique he is able to extract most of the kinetic energy.

To sky you need to use the largest kite you can hold down in the highest wind.

So you do recommend trying to fly it with higher wind to get at that high?

I can hold it longer than that I think. It's just that it pulls downwind pretty hard then and I have to depower and it gets pretty uncomfortable. I don't have that problem with my other kites, because I can aim that power upwind even with 9 in 30kn. With the 17 that's much harder as it just keeps pulling downwind.

Anyway, next time I'll just try to ride slower and bring a smaller board too. Thanks for the tip!

Well it's not that simple. To jump real high you need to be able to send the kite back fast too, because then it creates apparent wind. If you can't hold your edge long enough while sending the kite you won't get high. And getting the 17 out in 35 knots is just flying, that doesn't count.

Last time there were gusts of 20 something and the wind was offshore (riding in a lagoon) so was affraid of flying out to sea  Couldn't imagine jumping in that wind, but I'll try next time :D
Thanks though. I'll just try to hold it longer. Otherwise I'll just get the 14 or 9 out. To me they're more fun to fly anyway.
