i was hoping for more specificity. is march still good? does april still get some waves? trying to plan couple of trips for may/april and then again in the fall.

It depends on your definition of 'good.' Whats your skill level?
I lived in the islands a long time...the world-class 30 foot waves are generally gone by then.

But if your just a novice surfer, then you should get more than you can handle during the off times you mention. You might use it as an opportunity to learn how to surf...Maui reefs will eat the skin off your legs off if you dont kite waves a lot and get dragged like a rag doll...

From what I remember the trades always hit the side of Maui that is all cliffs...but a lot of windsurfers go to Hookipa. Why not consider Oahu, the eastern ends have large sand bays for miles with solid trade winds...

You will probably have to do some homework to guarantee waves and side-on winds on Maui....

Maui waves are tricky, cause best spots are taken by surfers or windsurfers.
Also, there is no medium, it's either flat or expert level. (well, of course not..but not telling )
Safe money for island hopping. Depending on wind, Oahu might be better. Be flexible to go both islands to chase the conditions you prefer.

I've been in April and October and had plenty of wind, but smallish 3-4' waves. The summer has the most consistent wind, the winter has the bigger waves. Go to Hookipa to watch only, Pros and locals only! Just go to Kanaha at Maui. Plenty of waves and equipment to rent (I bring my 7,9,12m kites and rent boards for $25 a day). Plenty of room if you upwind to the east if the waves get crowded. Manaloha Rent a Car has cheap vans and cars. Non kiters will appreciate staying in Kehei. The best kiting in Kehei is Waipalani park at the Maui Sunset condos. Lahaina/Kanapali is too far with too much traffic for you to get up easily to Kanaha. If it's just you, stay on the North Shore. I love it and its cheap. Look on NWKite.com or BayAreaKiteboarding.com for places to stay

I am headed to Maui next week. I have been there many times in the summer and I always brought 7, 9, 11. It appears that the wind is more variable in the winter. I am thinking of bringing 8, 12, 15. Any thoughts on kite sizes? I have plenty of kites, but it is hard to figure out how hard the wind will blow on the windy days.

I will be heading there in late August with the family.
What is the average wind blowing there at that time of year?
Was thinking of bringing a 10 and 12mt or just hire some gear.
Not interested in the waves as we have nothing like that here in Nth Queensland, so I would take some punishment if I hit the big waves over there!
So if anyone could recommend some good spots and hire gear it would be much appreciated
