MFR - my 1ST wakeboard build

Postby MFR » Thu Feb 04, 2016 12:24 pm

Hi everyone.

You may have read my previous post asking about forming a rocker in a paulownia wood core.

Following that post, as promised I would upload some progress photos of my board so far.

This is my first board build and finding it just as fun as learning to wakeboard over my local cable park. I have been wakeboarding for about 6 months now and instead of buying a standard set up I thought I would build my own. This is the first time I have used a forum and finding this site very helpful and welcoming.

I would be happy to hear your comments and suggestions on my build and no doubt I will be asking for some friendly advice :thumb: and who knows maybe giving some based on my first experience.

so here it goes:

The delivery from Junksupply.com - wakeboard package:

Building the rocker table:

Building the jig to tapper the tips:

Making the board template:

Routing the channel for the rails:

Drilled holes for the inserts:

Fitted the inserts and poured the rails:

Over poured the resin so I could sand it down flat to the board:

cutting the board out:

Thinning the tips:

Used the belt sander to tapper the edges creating a slight bevel along the rails:

Happy so far:

Decided to burn my graphics into the wood to make it more personal and rustic looking:

This is where I'm at now. Thinking about burning a couple more graphics into the wood and making it look like a map.

Then its onto pre bending the board before I lay it up.

Wish me luck :bye:

nice job,

i see a burnt in navigational chart on the top, real antique looking, then burn around the edges like an old pirate map. that would look cool w the compass rose in the middle.

keep the pix coming...

Thanks people :thumb:

rynhardt - I will hand layup this board as I want to use a white pigment in the bottom layers of resin so one half of the board is white and clear resin on top. The layup will be:

- PTEX Xlinked Base 0.6mm
- tri-axial 22oz glass fabric
- Board
- tri-axial 22oz glass fabric
- PA nylon top sheet glossy finish

Planning on putting the layup under vacuum and in a heat box made from 50mm thick styrofoam and a 2KW fan heater.

ANY THOUGHTS??

TPink - I like your thinking. I was thinking along the lines of a treasure map. The navigational chart would be good. I will look into it.

Im going to wet the board and put it in clamp Saturday and leave it for a week. Will upload some photos over the weekend.

I have also ordered some bindings for the board, so hopefully they will be delivered while the board is in clamp and keep me distracted while the board dries out.

Hello MFR
looking good ,nice progress, are you going to put any fins on this wakeboard ? if so now is the time to
cast some reinforcements, epoxy or urethane where the fin bolts go

very nice so far :D

Hi wood1, thank you :thumb:

No im not intending to put fins on this board also no concave either.

Ive been riding my friends slingshot shredtown which has a flat base with no fins. I like how it rides and I think it will better on the kickers and sliders with no fins. Just hoping I can achieve a rocker of 50mm - 65mm..........

You'll need to wet your triax as hell, almost bath it. Reconsider triax carbon instead, I will be really surprised if you get 20-30mm rocker (mind you, with no concave might work tho :)

Coz of nylon and ptex, there is no way to get rid of excess epoxy, plus add double epoxy under nylon to get rid of bubbles. Tough job with a vac. Pneumatic press is way better for this job. Very ambitious for a first board :)
A bit scared for your nylon under this heat, is all temp. rated, your vac film, nylon etc? The epoxy in triax will heat quite a lot, think 60-80 degC, maybe more with 22oz.

22oz = 623 grams (x2) + epoxy + ptex

I recon >3.5kg board. Duno if important for wakeboards.

Hope this helps.
