Line extensions, brands, lengths?

Postby Onthewater860 » Tue Jan 10, 2017 4:20 am

I'm trying to decide on lines. I've got two bar and line set ups. Currently identical except ones above bar and the other is below bar trim. Both ss. Both are 20" 20m. I use them for 9,12,17m kites. Thinking upgrading below bar to above trim and going to 23" bar. For my 17 which I ride the most in the summer.
It's much cheaper to get new bar and upgraded trim than all the above with lines.

SO this is where extensions come in.
Standard is 23" bar with 27m lines from Ss.
So what makes of extensions should I get and how long? Is 7m good, too long or too short??

I needed 10m extensions with my 17m to learn in marginal San Diego winds. Short extensions aren't worth the effort to put on and take off, or the occasional catching of the mid-line connection.

I think my 10m extensions were by naish?

7m seems worthwhile, but if you're really trying to squeeze marginal wind performance out of a 17m, just get 10m.

When my lines wear out I'm going to rebuild my San Diego bar with lighter weight lines that are 10m longer. Light wind special. And I won't need to extensions.

For light winds I am using 15m extensions on my 18m kite, that makes a significant difference.

you're not trying to use the same bar for all your kites right? because 27m lines are really long for a 9 and 12m

I think you're on the right path, man! I've been using two bars - a regular 52cm with 22m lines for 5.5m-14m kites and 52cm with 30m lines (23m + 7m extensions) for foiling and my 15m lightwind kite. For ultimate lightwind I add another 7m resulting in 37m lines and I can ride in 6 knots on 15m Turbine with that.

Extensions help for longer initial kite dive buying you time to start and get on plane and getting some apparent wind to keep going. Also frequently you get wind gradient with additional height or manage to get kite above tree/house line. Works great!

Get 3m extensions or 23m Slingshot lines for your smaller bar and 27m + 10m extensions for longer.
