Ozone 4m uno for a high wind hydrofoiling?

Postby plummet » Thu Jan 26, 2017 4:44 am

Anyone tried the ozone 4m uno lei trainer kite on as a high wind HF engine?

I have flown one in the kite buggy in 30+ knots. It looped and whipped around even did some pivot turning. It was interesting in the buggy which makes me think it might be a sweet high wind engine for wave riding on the foil.

Thoughts?

There is a video of the Houston kite guys on a 2 line trainer kite so it may well work

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BGotxYfyHo

Their trainer kite looked like it needed working a lot to get steady power. As you have flown the uno you probably have a better idea of how well it generates apparent wind.

But what would the water state be like in 30+ knots? would you get enough flat sections between the waves to make it more fun than a regular board?

Years ago, Marc Blanc used regularly a small Ozone Uno with his hydrofoil (4m or even less I think) ; so it works !
For very high winds you can also consider 3 stutt kites for better rigidity, like 4m Slingshot Rally or even more stable 4.5 m RPM .

Can't comment about hydrofoils, but its a cool little kite. I have 4 and 6 I'm using to teach my kids. I can get upwind on flat water with a Slpeene Session type board in 25 knots.

Oh yeah! that's the style of flying I'm thinking off! was doing that type with the buggy looping stalling. super fun.

Wonder what wind this vid was taken in?

When do you need a 2.5?

30 knots around here usually also generates 3m + swell also. So the idea is to ride the waves and ocean swell. I wont lie 30 knots on a hydrofoil in chop and ocean swell is freaken hard. But its made harder by that fact i'm being punished on my 6m with too much kite power. Particularly when running with the swell.

At the moment with my skill level. No 30 knots on the normal board is more fun. But I see the potential, particularly for days when there waves aren't clean and lining up.
