race technique

Postby Mat Tor » Wed Sep 06, 2017 7:22 pm

Do any of you know where to find out about the technique in race? I mean speed technique.
I know it's a secret and jealous subject for the pros and they don't like sharing tips. I guess there will be some places that's posted the basics.
Thanks in advance
Mat

Gunnars videos are really good for learning the transitions.

At first it's most important not to fall. One fall and you lose 200m in a race.

The best way to improve is to get out and ride with others who are slightly faster than you. It is really hard to train by yourself.

Even the top guys seem to have different riding positions so hard to say what's best. I think most are trying to lock the rear leg straight when going upwind and keep the kite low.

Keeping your weight in also helps.

So, being almost bent double when going up wind with a very straight back leg (it burns)

Hi Guys,

There are quite a few things that need to be covered in regards to race setup and technique.

I will be making some vids about this when I get the time, but here are a few things.

1) Take as much power as you can handle. Not overpowered. If you have to slow down to control the power, you obviously will not be going fast. This is why short lines come in really handy.

2) You need to get your tacks and gybes on both sides to 10 out of 10.

3) Know your equipment. Tuning your foil and kites is really important. Getting your board and foil trim right makes a major difference on how fast you can push your board on reaches.

4) Keep the kite low on both courses.

5) Work on your core strength. You need to be able to keep your body "stiff" on those fast reaches.

6) Train with others and set goals.

Thanks a lot Gunnar.
I think it's a very interesting video, where can see lots of details.
It would be incredible to find more material like this with an explanation.

Hi Gunnar,

respect for your speed and thanks for the nice video which fits perfect to my not only but much race technique question:

During tacks I happily learned to go directly into the backstrap on the new side so don't waste a step not on the wide stance of my race board and also on the mono. As you also show it perfectly in the tacks of your video.

But what's about jibes?

In the video you even make an extra step out of the back strap in front of the jibe (which I don't do, while not being so fast) and than an extra one in front of the back strap, as I also do and would be happy to avoid, as especially on the mono, but also the race foil, this step requires to fly the kite more up and is a phase with a bit instability and less control. :(

So my question: Does anybody do jibes all feet straps to straps without any extra step? And any tips to learn?

Thanks and don't worry about the other topic: I am not just on SLOW STYLE, but also still enjoy freerace. :D

Hi Dude,

Yes. When I am being safe I take my foot out first. This reduces the distance I need to cover to the front strap. Remember that after my ruptured disc I only have about 50% feeling in my toes on my left foot, so I have some problems with finding the strap fast with my left foot, so every little helps. On my Starboard tack I pretty much gybe straight out of the strap.
