Shoe goo on depower line to prevent wear?

Postby sarc » Tue Sep 12, 2017 6:26 am

So the other day I had some 6mm spectra and a tube of shoe goo on my desk...
That got me thinking about putting them together - a home-made urethane sleeve for the depower rope.

So let's hear it... crazy idea or not? Haven't got around to try it yet.

Why bother? As long as you're not grinding sand into them DP lines last for ages and cost next to nothing to replace when they do wear out.

That could be an option !
Personally I use a "sur-gaine" (sorry I do not know the name in English) made of dyneema around my depower rope ( so sliding in the hole of the bar) ...
Image

I love it ; wear is quite inexistent, and the gliding quality remains the same after hours of ride (no "little balls" of dyneema);

It is a bit expensive (3.65 Euros per meter), but it is worth it .

I've never had a need for this, but if you are going to put goop on your lines, you are probably better off spraying it on.
You can get Plasti Dip in a wide array of colors. Put on several light coats until you get what you want. No idea how it would hold up, but it'd look better than putting Shoe Goo on your lines...

a picture of this would explain... it is not clear to me exactly what you mean.

On the topic: check the hole in your bar, with many bars that have aluminum inserts in the center, the hole may develop sharp edges after sand abrades it.
Easing these edges with a rat-tail file (or sandpaper wrapped around a chopstick, pencil, etc) will reduce wear... for a time.

Depower Line Amsteel cost just a bit more than a tube of Shoe Goo, why bother?

Dont bother - just use candle wax - i rubbed my depower rope with a candel for 10 mins and it does not seen to wear anymore - its been good for over two years now :D , before the candle wax i got a season out of the depower line! Switch controller 2 bar.....

SO after all I decided to NOT use shoe goo because I fly North Rebels with 5th line and I'm afraid the shoe goo would wear down the 5th line since shoe goo is quite hard when dry (or jam if I coat the 5th too - shoe goo is not slippery...)

I looked up the sur-gaine on google, that seems a nice option! Thanks!

I use Switch controller 2 on my frankenbar and I really like its large smooth hole. Line wear is not bad at all and I rub surf wax (candle wax on a pinch) on my depower line because I'm a NERD when it comes to equipment. It's mostly for fun really...

If you want to prevent wear on amsteel, best to use spliced line, as opposed to hollow. This minimizes excess loads to certain strands which can cause amsteel to fray. Using candle wax is an additional option too (but does not replace spliced line), depending on the hardware you are using as it can cause things to gum up (cleats, pulleys, stoppers, etc).
Another option is to add a hose around the amsteel (for e.x. urethane, nylon).

I use bees wax. Makes a big difference in depower line longevity.
