Tuttle box broke

Tuttle box ripped apart on my slingshot space pickle board yesterday....pic is below. Also, a guy that rides a decent amount on the racing circuit said the tuttle box on my board is way too small and would have broken eventually pretty easily.

Was riding yesterday and something felt off about halfway thru the session each time I waterstarted, thought it was just lulls in the wind. Then was chasing a boat hauling ass and had a crash unlike anything I had before, was like someone just pushed me off the board, no fish strike as I've had that before and went forward, this was different.

Anyway, from watching Gunnar's video on the tuttle box deal, I definitely have a 'deep tuttle box' on this Delta foil. There is a Camet board for sale with a spotz 3 attached to it. Gunnar says the spotz 3 is what he calls a 'chinook tuttle box' being that it is 10mm less deep than a 'deep tuttle box'. He states a deep tuttle box mast will not fit into a chinook tuttle box, which concerns me that I cannot buy a Camet board possibly. But a chinook tuttle box mast can fit into a deep tuttle box. So if the spotz3 is sitting inside a Camet board that means the board could be a deep tuttle setup or a chinook setup. Fucking confusing I know.

Anyway, does a Delta hydrofoil mast(deep tuttle box) fit into a Camet board?
I'm buying a new board for sure, but is fixing this board to learn a little about the art worth it or is the brain damage too much?

Chinook does make a deep Tuttle box, but they are very hard to find. Gong in France uses deep Tuttle Chinook. I know for a fact. I owned one.

It looks like whoever installed your Tuttle did it wrong. No divinycell foam was used.

Have owner of board you want to buy, measure depth of box at rear and front edge of Tuttle. Compare this to head on your foil. This will conform fit.

Ya. Looks like it was the basic box mounted directly into the low density foam core. If so, way too light for a foil. Seen much more robust installation on production sailboards for windsurfing fins.

Option could be to fix it with proper construction. With a box like this...

Yes, delta and spotz foils fit in the same box. It's the chinook tuttle that Gunnar talks about in his video.

You should be able to find a spotz 2 or 3 board for a decent price.

Gunnar states in the video that the spotz connection is not the same dimension as the Delta connection...he states the spotz connection point on the mast is 10mm or 1cm shorter, therefore there is going to be a problem somewhere. He states the chinook(spotz) dimensions will fit in the deep tuttle but the deep tuttle wont' fit in the chinook. Theres a guy locally that I just thought of with a Camet board that I can test the fit tomorrow maybe.


My guess is the Camet board is a deep tuttle setup so it accepts either the spotz or the Delta, but that is my question I am trying to figure out.

That sucks. We see all manner of tuttle box variant failures here.

thank god for plate mounts. Fin boxes were just never made, nor engineered for a 1 meter lever. Think of the forces!

I have been riding a Taaroa Joy with a standard Tuttle box for over a year now with no problems. Several of my friends have the same. We ride boards made by Mikes Lab, Taaroa, Roberts and other competent companies.

Just look at the connection between your mast and fuselage (which takes comparable forces) if you doubt that a standard Tuttle box is strong enough.

The original poster here just had a very poorly made board..

Just go have the board fixed, will work effortlessly when the box is reinstalled with good reinforcements around

As the Tuttle box is not conical like the pro box, you can cut down a deep tuttle head to fit into a Chinook tuttle box.

If you do install one, do it properly. The guy who installed it in your old board did a horrible job. Normally you need to reinforce the box with closed cell foam and not laminated it directly into the eps foam of the board.

If you get one from GoFoil it will already be in the Foam reinforcement.

One thing to be aware of when mentioning GoFoil, is they don’t follow Tuttle standards perfectly. Gofoil runs screws vertically, while Tuttle standards specify screws perpendicular to the top surface. Most of the time the screws still fit through the holes in the deck, but sometimes might need opening the holes a little.
