How do you dismount?

Postby junebug » Thu Dec 14, 2017 2:20 pm

At the end of a session, how do you dismount and get to land? I usually just ride to shore with the board high and then when I get close, I pull in on the bar to take the weight off the foil and lean back hard, eventually falling backward. It's not very graceful, but it does get me close so I don't have to body drag.

I've seen the Horue tutorial on beach landing, and it looks pretty cool, but it also looks like a good way to destroy a foil (or your butt) if you botch it.

I do the same - ride in foiling really high over the banks, but still not so high I risk ventilating, and then leaning backwards both foil and me so it does not ride further, but "lands" gently on its side.

Not very graceful no, and you have to turn the foil around to walk to shore afterwards - but I havent found any better way yet

Other ways ?

Maybe one could head sharp upwind like tacking and jump off landing standing ?
But a greater risk that you hit the bottom then, which is a no no

Some of the racers here ride high, and then pull the foil out of the water so sideways foil over the surface, and the rider hit the water ass first.
Only possible with straps, and just as un-graceful though

I do the hard carve upwind to fall into the water option. Sometimes for shits and giggles I just jump off

Whatever you choose to do just remember WELL KBHF rule number 1, DO NOT RUN AGROUND!
Impact damage to our rigs is cumulative you may not see it but EVERY shock is simply NOT good!
Think about the lever forces when you fly, now using the same logic what happens when you hit something solid?
Made even worse with straps!
As said flying in lean back kite at zenith and DO not touch bottom, with skill concentration this can be done easy!
If you are worried about how cool your session ends at the risk of damage to you and your flying sport toy then so be it.
If you choose to take care of your KBHF AND yourself then have a height margin in mind and do not care what others may think!

Watched the video. Ouch my knees ankles and soles of feet all sent a twinge at the thought.
The ride high carve into wind and arse check. So foil ends up on side. Is the go and you just have to convince yourself that you look cool doing it.

Tried many things, but till now mostly also:
Butt into the very deep water, foil to surface and then going fast downwind to shore this way:

But since a bit of a time and after 3 years I carefully started to do it like Phil but with straps as Benny here:

If you go slow with foot and knee loose the risk if hitting a sand bank is not to high, but for sure it stays a risk, the rest is pretty easy:

A small hop, take strap and with a mono there is not even the risk to strike the stabi into the ground on the end :naughty:

But not so cool as Phil yet, to do it on pure stone beaches. But could it be, that he is his best customer?

Along with Stef from Ketos at least in the KBHF freeride, style world that I know of.
ALL of both of their videos merit time!
But I bet there there are many more in the making!
