Egypt and Media

Postby kitehappy » Tue Feb 12, 2013 3:34 pm

Hello everybody!
It's not the Egyptian Ministry of Turism speaking here, nor the BBC or some tour agency promoter :)
I'm an insider whose desire is to report a point of view directly from the spot.
As I've been living and kiting in the Gulf of Aqaba for a while now and kind of fell in love with the atmosphere in South Sinai, I feel sorry when these days, due to the disorders in Cairo, lots of people, scared by the news, think all Egypt is on fire. What I wanna say is that whoever is interested in traveling to the Red Sea only has to go get the plane coz here is safe and fun...and blowing 30 knots!
Enjoy the wind and the sun, the crystal blue warm water and the desert complete the most peaceful surroundings.

Greetings from Happy Kite Dahab

well... you know... there were 2 suicide bombings of hotels, 2 cases of hostages taken and numerous firing incidents in Sinai all in the past few years. even a tourist bus filled with tourists was taken hostage because the beduins wanted the Sinai police to free some prisoners.
You are misinformed. Sinai is a dangerous place to travel to. The Egyptian authorities lost control over Sinai and the local beduin population together with extreme Islam (such as al kaida) do what ever they want.

I used to go to Sinai 4-5 times a year and really want to go back, really nice beaches and atmosphere.

That's what I'm talking about...I've been living here since 3 years, during revolution time (2 years ago) and all. Nothing ever happened here in SOUTH Sinai (Red Sea) during this time. What you are saying about hostage is in NORTH Sinai (Mediterranean sea), in Arish territory closer to Gaza stripe and Palestinian trouble, different beduin tribes...actually very far from here, almost 8 hours driving through mountains and desert.
I stay in Dahab, I've friends working and living in Sharm el Sheik, Hurgada, Safaga, Marsalam, El Gouna, all top class kiting destination which are suffering cause some geographical misunderstanding. Beduin population is famous for the hospitality.
Anyway, I dont want to sound too pushy, just want to point out that the country is big and is not the same everywhere.
Best wishes

So many good holidays, then it went all weird.
All inclusive came in through one hotel window, and the fantastic Egyptian hospitality went out the other,
Rather rude holiday makers replaced the polite holiday makers of old, glass wine glasses replaced with plastic, dirty replaced polished and clean, great food cooked by happy chefs were replaced by demoralised chefs serving fried cheap rubbish, their famous variety of scrumptious desserts were replaced with dodgy rice puddings for dinner and breakfast,
It all went from right to shite in little over 10 years.

But but but, I am going to give it another try, I am going back to the intercontinental hotel at somer bay, Abu somer, used to be quite posh and quite expensive, in fact silly expensive, drinks were very expensive,
Anyways, deposit has been paid, 2 weeks for two of us, £2.4k gmb, all inclusive nothing else available.its for the end of this year Over Christmas and new year, fingers crossed,

This will be the last time ever if its soured by a hospitality vacuum.

Since I'm Egyptian and i read this, I agree with most of the written above specially the part about the SAFE SOUTH SINAI, As i was just there couple of months ago drove the 2 way trip with my own car, had 3 - 5 sessions on the beautiful shore of Sharm el Sheikh.

Well to be honest yes Egypt is not the same ,, but it's still good enough.

How is it going in "Happy Kite"? never been there

Back in 2004 I hitch hiked from Suez -> El Tor -> Ras Mohammed -> Sharm -> Dahab. The beduin people I met were some of the most friendly. That was a decade ago though.

It really is a great spot to kite though.
