How to unglue pads from a board?

Postby athen » Fri Dec 22, 2017 6:45 pm

Hi guys,
please give me a technical advice :D

How can I completely unglue pads from an old board?
I got an old but very good board as a gift and now I want to totally remove the old pads which are glued to the board, in order to replace them with some new ones (to be then screwed)

Is there a way (a product) to take the old pads off but without damaging the graphics and the overall covering of the board? I don't want to use the wrong or corrosive stuff, but at the same time be able to get the board smooth and clean

Thanks a lot!!!

If the pads are glued with contact adhesive use a hairdryer but be careful not to use too much heat - go slowly and carefully. The heat has to get through the top of the pads to the adhesive so it takes time. If it's too hot to touch it's too hot! After that isopropyl alcohol should work to remove remaining adhesive but as always test a small area of the surface first.

athen,
Try taking some goo gone/goof off, and with the board on its side, put a little of that between the deck and the pads. After that sits for a minute, take some fishing line and slide it under the pads. I did it years ago on my old Underground Magic Carpet 158. I never bothered to remove the left over residue (lazy), but it worked to get the pads off. What board are you working on?

I think that Goo Gone contains petroleum distillates similar to isopropyl alcohol but with a bit of citrus smelly added to it.

1. tear off as much of the pad with your hands (the glue will still remain)
2. Place a rag over the glue(I use the yellow micro-fiber ones from Costco)
3. Soak the rag with Coleman Camp Fuel
4. let it set for 20 min or so (until the glue softens). The rag keeps the fuel from evaporating.
5. Use the cloth to rub off the rest of the glue

I just did one a week ago. Easiest way I found so far to remove everything without so much effort. :D

Use unglue to remove, glue to attach.
