Hook harness completely broke off

Postby ArneB » Sun Aug 19, 2018 5:17 pm

Nice session today in 27 knots, when on a downloop my harness hook completely snapped of.
No crash with someone or injury, but still, could have happened high up.

Had the harness for about 3 years, but surely this should not happen?

Had it happen several times.

But not since many years although I ride really powered.

Back then it was the fragile Dakine ones.

My pat love never broke

I had the same thing happen 4-5 years ago on a Dakine spreader bar. Yours looks like a Mystic???

You're right....it shouldn't happen. If your leash is attached to your flag out line, the kite will behave as if you punched out at your chicken loop. Of course, if you're mid-air in the middle of a big boost, that can be a problem.

Yeah also had a few snap a while back... once in 35/40 knots... managed to hold on as in snapped one, two... but got interesting after that.
Anyway, I agree, it shouldn't happen but then again car tyres shouldn't explode, but they do. I think you just got unlucky.

Check the ss at the break. You'll notice some discoloring where it started to fail(exposed to elements) .The break took time, started with fatigue and spread over time. You should be able to see where it started and the last part(cleaner looking) that broke leading to complete failure.I guess we should check our hooks from time to time.I haven't even glanced at mine since the last breakage

This is why I don't hang onto gear after a couple of years. I haven't had my hook break off but my chicken loop on a 2 year old Cabrinha bar once ripped off in 40mph winds, the start to a classic kitemere.

Thank you for sharing your story, because your photo made me realize I connected my short leash to the base of the hook rather than the separate lower hook still there in your picture.
A broken hook would have lead to a complete release, and a loose flying kite with a bar attached is a potentially dangerous hazard.

Yup, always attach your leash separately, even if you want it to be up front rather than in back or on the side. I use the end of my old-fashioned spreader bar. I've also had a hook come off, albeit it was on a really old harness, and luckily not during a jump.
