Re: Electricity!

It’s a pretty common thing on the water as you folks probably know. In Florida it means lightning’s going to start within minutes and you had better move fast. In temperate areas that may not necessarily be the case. I had it a couple of times in OBX with storm clouds about 15 to 18 miles away. It g...

Re: 17m kite Overkill

C1ED8D9A-E376-4333-A460-746E1CC02932.jpeg I routinely fly a 19 m Contra at 190 lbs., it feels like a 14 or 15 m kite, turns fast and easy. I have had more sessions saved by Contra's than I can easily recall. Also, I like to ride close in to rocks, shallows to shoot pictures while kiting, foils won'...

Re: What's your favorite wind range?

Rare days of 20 to 25 knots. You take what you can get, usually on the lower side. Wind varies the world over.

Re: kiting in front of a condo/obstruction

Thanks RickI. Any guess on how big the reduced wind speed zone would be? In my case, the condo is ~8 stories tall and ~50m wide. But it is back a ways from the beach - maybe 150m. I suppose the best way to know for sure is to get out there and feel the wind! It isn't very wide fortunately which sho...

Re: kiting in front of a condo/obstruction

If the wind is onshore with an obstruction DOWNWIND behind the beach (say a condo building), how much does this affect the wind at the beach? I am considering going to visit some family that lives in a beach-front condo and want to make sure it is safe to kite there. I have heard about loftings for...

Re: Should Toby start a crowdfunding to save KF?

Less than 45 votes to fund out of the thousands of participants, we can do better I think. Regarding the sponsors, they have their own serious cash woes at the moment. We may need to pickup the slack to help Toby in keeping the site going for a while as things sort out. This site is a unique and val...

Re: KS #10 - When Extreme Ability Isn't Enough

I wrote this about Kinsley ThomasWong's terrible kiting accident. It was too soon to share all the specifics of the accident but using the Kiting Scenario series it would be possible to share some important hard won lessons from this awful accident. In time, the accident cost him his life. Kinsley w...

Re: Covid-19 - Resuming Kiting, In Time

Good luck avoiding this disease now and in the future Bille. This disease doesn’t simply bring death it can also cause permanent lung lacerations and other types of binding disability. Lets see a show of hands for people who want to give up kiting because they don’t have the wind for it anymore or d...

Re: Covid-19 - Resuming Kiting, In Time

You are lucky. We haven't had anything like that in seven weeks and we aren't alone. Both beach and public kiting access has been banned to all. Beach access is still banned in my part of Florida and may remain so for a while longer. Some other areas further north have slowly opened within days and ...
