Re: Offshore windshift ---> Lost Kite

By the way, these offshore wind shifts are common in Florida, likely elsewhere too for similar reasons. Some of the main ones here include: 1. Passage of a front with the customary rough 90 degree wind shift. So, things can be going great, a dry or wet frontal boundary passes by and boom, the wind s...

Re: Offshore windshift ---> Lost Kite

Speaking from personal experience off the same coast but years in the past, you can't always self-rescue by sailing in an "offshore" wind. I usually sail more or less 90 degrees off the wind when self-rescuing, sometimes less in stronger wind and more in lighter wind. Offshore wind here is usually w...

Having Your Bells Rung In A Buoy Collision

https://www.facebook.com/kiteBoarding.world/videos/362360734402288/ I tried to embed this but no joy, just click the hyperlink above to watch on Facebook. It is worth viewing however and not to make fun of the guy who could have been killed but for the harsh object lesson it illustrates. Think of h...

Re: How to describe the windstrength

If you really want to convey what is going on, and given that it is so uneven, you can give both the average and gust ranges.

Re: Kiting Port Charlotte

Those two sources will give you shoreside accessible launch areas for starters. There is lots of sheltered water over there which you can move to by boat as you gain familiarity with the area. It is worth noting that already weak winds will be further diminished in sheltered waters. In the cooler mo...

Re: Kiting Port Charlotte

I don't know contacts right in Port Charlotte but two good ones nearby. I would get in touch with Roy at Ace Performer near the Causeway to Sanibel to the south, https://www.aceperformer.com/ . I would contact Lauren with Island Style https://islandstylesports.com/ in Sarasota. Both are knowledgeabl...

Re: Trying to get into Kiteboarding is this a good deal?

A beginner setup, with you the beginner, BEING SETUP! If you haven't had some good pro lessons yet, then do that FIRST. Don't worry about buying anything other than a harness and other essential accessories as indicated until after you have some good quality lessons. You use their gear at the instru...

Re: (How not to?) Deal with 40 kt.+ sudden winds

It's mostly aimed at intermediate to advanced kiters who INTENTIONALLY go out in high winds. Wrong, watch the video again. It doesn't qualify who it is aimed at, which is part of the problem. It would be a great guide for people IF it was just focused on dealing with "normal" overpowered conditions...

Re: (How not to?) Deal with 40 kt.+ sudden winds

I am concerned about one video currently, one with the remarkable title: "Kitesurfing: Wind Storm 40+ Knots - How To Stay Safe If Overpowered" without emphasizing "killing" the kite power. Lots of guys have been killed and many more maimed in far less than 40 kts.+ worldwide in the last couple of de...

Re: (How not to?) Deal with 40 kt.+ sudden winds

He spends a lot of time on, near and approaching land, aside from the ease of shooting, talking about keeping the kite flying come whatever. That is wrong based on many accidents over the last 20 years. Just pull the QR's as soon as you can safely do it BEFORE the strong winds come and don't try to ...
