Here's a good read on galvanic corrosion with carbon fiber.

Re: Corrosion basics for kiteboarders

Ok, what is Intergranular corrosion? ... You research complicated stuff ; then make it simple enough for a Dumb-Ass like me to understand ! :thumb: Are you a teacher, by trade ? Bille Yeah, trying to absorb the mechanisms of corrosion does make your brain hurt! No, I am not a teacher. Engineering i...

Re: Corrosion basics for kiteboarders

Ok, what is Intergranular corrosion? Intergranular corrosion is the preferential attack of the grain boundaries within the metal crystal structure. Why does it happen and how can we guard against it? When stainless steels are heated for between 500 and 800 deg C for a period of time they can become ...

Re: Corrosion basics for kiteboarders

I'm interested to see how you could get an anode into a place close enough to become sacrificial considering there are typically tight fits and countersunk fasters without washers etch. But its an interesting thought that might become a sellable item if an easily retrofittable solution was developed...

Re: Corrosion basics for kiteboarders

Wrogu, galvanic corrosion is an issue for individuals using aluminum hydrofoil masts with stainless fasteners.

Fair call re intergranular corrosion. I'll upload info tonight.

So, would a zinc anode (like on a motor boat) do the job on alu hydrofoil? If so, why no one is using it?
I don't see a way to get the zinc anode into the crevice of the thread which is where the galvanic corrosion will occur for the stainless fastener/aluminium fuse issue.

Re: Corrosion basics for kiteboarders

That's a long winded way to say "Rinse your shit", also "Bolts may seize over time, yo". Hahahaha,,, i'm loving the irony of your name "Rusty Chain" discussing corrosion... Yep. But knowledge is power and many people think stainless will never corrode when it can. Consider yourself now informed. Yo...

Re: Corrosion basics for kiteboarders

How do we prevent pitting corrosion. Well the best way is to use material which is not susceptible to pitting/corrosion in given conditions. 316 ss is not considered to be resistant to corrosion in seawater. Alloys with higher PREN than 316 are also not considered immune. For 20C water 3% NaCl, pre...

Corrosion basics for kiteboarders

Hey bros, Here's a quick run down on how corrosion works and how you can apply that knowledge to kiteboarding. To transform metals from their natural state (eg iron ore)we expend large amounts of energy to form them into the metals that we know today. Once we have transformed the metals into the com...
