Re: An expensive start to kiting, feeling discouraged

The Captain's advice is really good about water starts. My girlfriend (super nervous kiter) had the same issue learning to water start because she was too afraid to commit to the maneuver with enough power. This leads to fall starts and twisting and turning. You have to put the kite in the wind wind...

Re: Lessons. Lisah's post got me thinking. How many took'm

Randy's experience makes a good point: There are a lot of operations (especially outside the US where you can't get sued for messing up as easily) where schools hire people with no real experience who are willing to take a smaller cut of the fees. Kite instructing is one of the few decently paid job...

Re: Lessons. Lisah's post got me thinking. How many took'm

Personally, I think kite-schools are a tourist rip-off. You are wrong in so many ways. There are unethical people who run all types of businesses. No one I know in the kiting industry who are instructors are unethical. I know and have met kite instructors all over the world and there is only 1 I ha...

Re: Lessons. Lisah's post got me thinking. How many took'm

Personally, I think kite-schools are a tourist rip-off. But one that I am happy to allow and to promote because I love having a convenient place to pump up (electric generators), fix my kite, store my equipment, and buy missing parts when I need them. Also they deal with the local territorial issue...

Re: An expensive start to kiting, feeling discouraged

My opinion: 1) Look at the money spent as sunk cost. Dont worry about it. It's gone. That's done with. 2) Now start looking at this as fun and not scary. I taught myself to kite using a dvd and youtube. I did it without lessons and with a 12 meter kite. I am more of the adventurous type so I just we...

Re: Registration Day 2014 Mondial Du Vent

I'm coming down the the GF on Tuesday. I know most of the kiting will be done by then, but will hopefully catch the tail end. How's the wind? Where's the action taking place? Any intel would be appreciated.

Re: Spending January in Sri Lanka

The main season for sri lanka is May to September. During which the winds are fantastic. The primary place I go to is Kalpitiya to a place called Kite Kuda, although there are several competitors who do a fine job there. January is a secondary winter season, which I have never personally experienced...

Re: First time in cape town

Did you go to Langebaan? No shark risk there. Warmer water. No waves.

I liked my first trip to S. Africa so much that I went back the next season with the GF.

Re: In Tarifa for a month

I would defi Italy rent a car, at least to start. Once you've settled in and found a place to live then you can maybe get by without one.

I rented with Auriga and highly recommend them. Great price. Located just over the border as you walk across from Gibraltar.
