There's some perspective tricks going on in this photo, but this heli was flying below kite level, filming the action on a big wave day a few years ago. I got a little too close downwind and had my kite smacked down hard, but not hard enough to hit the water. You really had to clear your gybes on th...
The Second Wind shop is one of my favorites, they usually have lots of used equipment. I'm not sure they sell kites, but you can probably find one on Craigslist. Winter is my favorite time here in Maui, best time for large waves. Even though it's less windy than summer, it's still pretty windy; I we...
What do you guys do with your helmet, jacket, shoes, pump while you're kiting. If I left any of those items on a bike in SA they'd be gone in 60 seconds. I leave my helmet on the bike, jacket gets locked in one of the side cases, if I wear it. Some days I ride with my kite helmet, not great, but it...
Bought this beat up F650 6 months ago, and it came with a home made surf rack. It's kinda goofy, and drags on the ground if I corner too hard to the right, but damn, it actually works pretty well. Fun to use too. The front rack is clamped to the engine crash bars, and the rear section just clamps on...
That'd be cool. The western harbor breakwall has a good wave called Big Ed's. It's not bad for kiting, but last time I rode it I didn't stay long, as Ed is a 15 foot hammerhead, and I didn't feel like meeting him.
Can't speak for the other islands, but you can walk to Kite Beach from the Kahului cruise ship dock, and if there's a north swell there will be good waves right there. Check it out on Google Earth.
I used to always dream about kitesurfing behind a huge quadcopter on those windless days - this is actually a lot simpler. Don't fall in the water though. Lithium polymer batteries and brushless motors are scary powerful these days - the energy density is pretty weak compared to gasoline, but the po...
