Re: Stop this thing

Wow, that brings back strange sensations of early learning, including out of control crashes that had the foil go up and through my lines. Just wait till you get riding in the open ocean and try going downwind with a big swell running, the speed is downright scary. My buddies are all a lot better th...

Re: High Winds - Old School

I never understood the allure of front or back loops windsurfing, despite the fact I would never have had the nerve to try them. The landing seems hard and awkward compared with landing a kite jump, and even I can jump far higher with a kite than any windsurfer ever will. The jumps on the face of th...

Re: Anyone hitting OBX next week

What are you doing on the sound on a steady NE?!!!???!!! Get over to the ocean and do a downwinder! I hope to be there April 21 for two weeks. A little warmer and one year we got a five-day NEaster with 30 knots and huge waves, was the best ever downwinders, albeit scary at times.

Re: Ocracoke

Several times I've ridden the ocean side. There is a small local crew who take a 4-wheel drive upwind (in SW) to near the point and do a short downwinder back to the airport road, which is the easiest access point. I've also done long downwinders from the airport to the end of the island, across the...

Re: Making launch safer - learning from the experts

Oldcolonial, I don't agree with the second part of your final comment "Setting a kite down without an anchor or release to the flag out line tends to only work in light winds." I routinely end up on deserted beaches at the end of a long downwinder, deserted because by then it is blowing so hard noon...

Re: South Africa first timer

As the season weakens you will indeed need to drive around. Keep Platboom at Cape Point in mind, often the windiest spot on the Peninsula. Windalert spot at the Cape give a good indication of the conditions there. I would only drive to Witsand/Breede River, 4 hours, if there is an easterly for two d...

Re: South Africa first timer

Westerlies are a general problem for that coast. In my opinion Hermanus is unpleasant on a straight westerly as forecast for Thursday as it is a gusty wind coming over the hills. Same for Witsand. I think Platboom in the Cape Point National Park should work with NW on Thursday, albeit not that stron...

Re: South Africa first timer

If the SEaster is blowing and it is forecast to be stronger there than at Bloubergstrand you will find lots of kiters at Witsands. I have also kited Scarborough on a strong NW in the winter, but had it to myself.

Re: Wetsuit can't decide - Mystic Legend vs Rip Curl Flash Bomb

Cool Exal, glad you had a good time in Cape Town. You and I clearly have different metabolisms to Peter Frank! I like my old Mystic 4/3 suit, even restitching parts of it with dental floss to keep it going as the fit is perfect. And indeed, be a bit more patient taking it off instead of standing on ...

Sam Light backstage at the KOTA

Pretty amazing that most of the riders he asks before the semifinals correctly predicted the podium three.
