Gregory Alpinisto 50: a great backcountry/snowkite pack

I figured I'd share my thoughts on a piece of gear that I've been really happy with: the Gregory Aplinisto 50L backpack. Since I'm starting to get more into the backcountry touring side of kiting, I decided last year that I wanted a dedicated pack with some nicer features like plenty of space, bombe...

Re: Kite-o-rado Snowkite Conditions

Nice! Hoping to get enough snow on the ground on Thursday to maybe inaugurate one of the local spots. Fingers crossed!

Re: Something new from HQ Kites.

Hey, a little late to this conversation, but thought I would throw in my 2 cents about the HQ4 Empulse, since I've got quite a bit of time on them. The Empulse is a pretty quick kite, in terms of turning speed and ground speed. Faster than the Matrixx in both regards. But I would not consider it lif...

Re: Kite-o-rado Snowkite Conditions

So ended up hitting Guanella Pass on Friday - wind forecast was looking really solid like high teens gusting to high 30's straight from the west. Road was supposed to be open but unfortunately was still closed by the time I arrived. Based on Avy forecast and family constraints, I wanted to be up the...

Re: Kite-o-rado Snowkite Conditions

Matt, I would love to check out your neck of the woods sometime. I'll have to see if maybe I could coerce some of my family to come out. It would help if there were other kiddos there. As for this week, I think I am going to try to check out Guanella Pass on Friday. With any luck, they should have t...

Re: Kite-o-rado Snowkite Conditions

Oh man, me and a buddy almost went to Guanella on Saturday, but every winter picture I looked at online seemed pretty scraggly and like it never really fills in that well. From your picture, it looks great though! Bummer we missed each other. Coverage in the mountains is great right now, I'm not sur...

Re: Kite-o-rado Snowkite Conditions

Anthony, sounds like you are getting in some great kiting this year. Eventually I need to make it over there - thanks for your offers of hospitality. Hit up Hoosier Pass today - snow wasn't great and pretty packed from the high winds the night before. There is a nice base forming though, especially ...

Re: Kite-o-rado Snowkite Conditions

Hey Zack, Flat Tops look it has a lot of potential. So are you approaching from the S side of Deep Creek?

I might be checking out Hoosier Pass with a couple of buddies tomorrow - will let you know how it goes if I do...

Re: recommendation snow kite

Hq kites any good? Rush 300 Trainer and apex hq4 8/11m? So yes, I'm a big fan of the Apex as a 1st kite. They are a lot of kite for the money. My general advice to people is to get the 5.5m to learn on, and then keep it around for high wind days. 8m would also be an option. I still use my 5.5m Apex...
