Re: The World's Fastest Kite. Period

The apparent wind is much much less than 70 knot! The course is so down wind (150 degrees) thay the appparent wind is only around 25 knots at 50 knot speed with a true wind at 40 knot. See forexample http://www.sailingusa.info/true_wind_calculator.htm I’m also surprised he used a Switch Blade. I ima...

Re: How high is it possible to jump with a kite ?

Hi James, Many thanks. This was very well written and things are much more clear to me now! Abstracting away the water finally helped. My asking for formalism and formulas was because I had a feeling my intuition was wrong. I remember the introduction from my mechanics book long time a go. Mechanics...

Re: How high is it possible to jump with a kite ?

Yes, the boat experiment is good and perfectly understandable and the max height can be calculated with the usual formula v2/2g (eg ~ 5 m if the boat speed is 10 m/s). No energy is added to the system (kiter plus kite) after lift off. What is less understandable is that the max height according to t...

Re: Superman and some facts !

In principle a Go Joe works. The problem is that users of it don't learn to bodydrag upwind. They will then encounter a problem when the Go Joe implodes or they are testing a board without a Go Joe. I will recommend taking small tacks when in waves in order not to get too far away from the board. Ch...

Re: How high is it possible to jump with a kite ?

It is certainly posts like the ones Peter Frank and James write that make kiteforum an interesting forum to follow. But I think you (Peter and James) should see discussion as a healthy intererest in the topic I have for example not thought about the theoretical maximum height before. I don't accept ...

Re: How high is it possible to jump with a kite ?

I was not trying to ridicule anyone. The wordings about knowledge were your own. I am simply trying to get some arguments for the claim that the height can calculated from 0.5mv2=mgh were v is the apparant wind speed but I get no relevant answer. I am not saying this is untrue but I am sceptical and...

Re: How high is it possible to jump with a kite ?

Yes a little knowledge ca be a dangerous thing. I think I have enough basic understandings of mechanics to know that I don't know enough. That is why I am asking you again: Where did you get the correlation of apparent wind and kinetic energy from? Most of the pages you refer to describe simple fact...

Re: How high is it possible to jump with a kite ?

I can assure you kite constructors also use theory. Mor Nille kan ikke flyve. OK Lets make it simple: How high is it possible to jump without anything but a human body. This seems to be interesting far beyond the kiting community. It has been for thousands of years. If you look at the human body as ...

Re: How high is it possible to jump with a kite ?

But all the calculations are based on this postulate: "This speed (of the apparent wind, parenthesis by peterbjarke) determines the kitesurfers kinetic energy (its "total" energy when moving across the water)". This is certainly not obvious. At least to me ;-) Neither you or James have explained how...

Re: How high is it possible to jump with a kite ?

Hi James, Thanks for the links but it does not convince me. Do you have some peer reviewed literature you can refer to about using the apparent to calculate the kinetic energy? With respect to releasing the force I think you can compare the edging and a popped jump to being similar to stretching an ...
