Re: Who are the foilers?

It’s just a matter of time before everyone playing in smallish waves will be using foils. We r just at the very early stages as is the equipment we are using. The inherent benefits of a foil in waves cannot be denied. That's pretty much how I feel about it. Anywhere with large body of water with mi...

Re: is carbon much better?

Carbon is better no question, but alloy has it's advantages. The uplift is less than you get e.g. moving from an alloy to carbon bike. Unless you're racing or jumping, you don't really feel the weight of the foil on the water. Most of the weight benefit is handling the foil on the beach, while start...

Re: starting on duck tack to toeside

The advice to not lean back is good, as far as it goes. But you see Tucker lean way back in every tack. He is centred above the board, but the mast and board are well cranked over. He does lean back quite hard to initiate the tack, with the knees slightly bent, but then once the board is turning up...

Re: Fast wave hydrofoiling.

Based on the video, I agree that a fully fledged surf wing in that wind would be inappropriate. The stringy wing is great for foiling at speed in waves. It has a very loose feel, even a bit wobbly if you're not used to it - on a wave this translates into an ability to turn effortlessly at speed - ot...

Re: Fast wave hydrofoiling.

It would be interesting to see what sort of speeds you're clocking, or are required to keep up with the wave. Do you have a GPS? The pure surf wings, used without kites, reportedly max out around 40 km/h (https://www.oceanaddicts.com.au/hydrofoiling-competition/) Cross off is a good direction when y...

Re: Moses Onda is there better for me

I've been riding the kenalu foil, which is a very nice big wing for kitefoiling in waves.
https://kenalu.com/products/iwa-775.
Selling for $1000 complete. You can get it with a longer mast. Mine is 87cm.
I also have the smaller 580 wing (1050 cm2) which is probably more the size you're after.

Re: Does board volume still matter for water starts?

I think for conventional kite wings, you need a bit of planing ability. I have a couple boards of 97cm and 99cm and they are big enough. I'm not trying to capture the sub 10 knot sessions though. For lighter winds, a bit bigger would help, as would some volume. If you're riding a surf wing I really ...

Re: KeNalu sale

I'm still waiting on a replacement fuselage, which is taking a long time for some reason.
I don't want to be without a big wing over the Christmas break, so in the meantime I pulled the trigger on a stringy big wing upgrade. We'll see how that goes :)

Re: Foilboard (Pocket/Strapless) Paulownia

Yeah schenkles is the gold standard for paulownia foilboards. I also don't have those skills but still made a board I like. I've got a substantial amount of rocker, about 9cm in total. My board is laminated. It's not completely solid. I'll try to upload a pic or two. The only way you'll bend 18mm so...

Re: Will we see the first foil kite at King of the Air 2019?

if you saw the live stream of the event last year, you'd see that young Oli was a last minute invite (someone was sick/hurt), literally landed in Cape Town in the morning and was riding in the event, and completely pushing the top riders. I don't care what kite he uses, I hope he's in the event, th...
