Re: Hydrofoil evolution challenge #1: retractable foil

What about stacked wings ? It's a logical idea that I believe could be set up to work reasonably well (although it's hard to say whether it's more suitable for thread #1 or #2 :) ). An obvious limitation is that several small fins are generally less efficient than one big one. When I first started ...

To go faster, Sherlock.

More specifically "to develop...much faster, more versatile future generation of hydrofoil" - from my opening post in this thread. To be clear, this is the hydrofoil forum.

Re: Hydrofoil evolution challenge #2: surface piercing foil

Here's some food for thought: 1. Current foil board designs are adapted from "sit-down hydrofoils", which are towed behind power boats where efficiency is unimportant. To emphasize the point, SDHs often have painfully inefficient very-low-aspect-ratio foils (which were adopted by early kite foil boa...

Re: Hydrofoil evolution challenge #2: surface piercing foil

I think the discussion comes down to the fact that you need a surtain amount of lift for level flight, dictated by the rider weight and kite power. The topical discussion of this thread is about advancing surface piercing foil design for kiteboarding, predicated upon the fact that required lift is ...

Re: You need dicks and newbies or the forum dies!

This is not true. Both me and my wife has done research in this field (social technical systems, experts collaboration and user engagement) In forums like this people play different roles, but the dicks / trolls as it were are actually a detriment to social technical systems. They are the click bai...

Re: Hydrofoil evolution challenge #2: surface piercing foil

Maybe will you find some inspiration from... Thanks; interesting info. Foil boards have an interesting advantage over other hydrofoil applications because lateral forces allow the altitude-modulation mechanism of a "v" without actually requiring a "v", along with its inherent inefficiency (related ...

Yes (as I stated previously), which makes the rest of your argument irrelevant, unfortunately. If it's still unclear, please read my preceding reply to lobodomar.

Re: Hydrofoil evolution challenge #2: surface piercing foil

Again, let’s not forget that, in steady-state, the free flow comes basically aligned with the direction of travel. Agreed, as I stated. If you have any difficulty in accepting this concept... Ironic. It has to be horizontal. Here's where you're incorrect (and why your entire argument went off on a ...

Re: Hydrofoil evolution challenge #2: surface piercing foil

Not really, at least not in the case at hand (or at foot  ) JS, my take is that RH is correct. Maybe you're thinking too much in terms of gliders? Let's not forget that, in steady-state, the foil is moving horizontally. And that the direction of the free flow acting on something that is movin...

Re: Hydrofoil evolution challenge #2: surface piercing foil

So JS you define angle of attack relative to the board/mast/fuselage? No. AoA is the angle between the chord line and the direction of free flow near the foil. Basic fluid dynamics, folks. The water in waves moves in a circle, so trying to consider the flow of water relative to the wing, you would ...
