Snowshoe Pass, Montana

With sleds, kites and a topo map we headed south up the West Fork of the Madison River 15 miles to check out a new area, Snowshoe Pass. We have kited all around this area for the past few years and thought that this spot would have potential. Sure enough, we found great terrain, spectacular views an...

The Heart of Winter

With the last wind and snow episode in the Northern Rockies, snowkiters around the region know that we are in the heart of winter. Storm kiting has been superb. Post-storm sunny kite days have been superb. Every day that we have been out, we have been finding ballroom smooth surfaces of either dry p...

Big Horn Snowkite Summit Recap: The Future of Snowkiting

Never before in the United States has the announcement of a snowkite event created so much interest in so short a period of time. The idea was to host a week of snowkiting, on-snow instruction, kite demos and evening seminars at a backcountry lodge in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. The brainchi...

Re: Best kite for touring/ascending?

Rasmus, if you want to buy a foil, I would suggest the 13m Frenzy. The Frenzy has a huge range, as does the Summit. The Frenzy is very stable and user friendly as well. The Summit offers more performance but it requires slightly more bar input to achieve that performance. With either kite you can cl...

Re: 2014 Ozone Frenzy reviews?

While I have not flown this year's Frenzy, I have sessioned with a few friends who were flying them last week. I was on this year's Ozone Summit and they were on the 2014 Ozone Frenzy. From my perspective, the Frenzy flew great. In the lightest of winds, 8 - 10 mph, one of the the riders was flying ...

Re: Single-skin depowerable Peak from Flysurfer, on the snow

Pascal, thanks for posting photos and looking forward to seeing some on-snow video. How about a few words as to the kite's handling and feel? Comparisons with other kites you have flown? Btw, thanks for WhiteKite14, as always, you have a great time chasing the wind!

Friday, 4 October 2013 – First Sessions – Big Horn Mtns, WY

Last week, cold air, Pacific moisture and high winds converged atop the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. The result was enough snow for the first sessions of the winter. While the snowtel was reporting 19”, as you can see from the photos, it was generally half that depth. However what was lacking in ...

Re: Where to snowkite?

Yes, Tim, there are snowkite spots that fit that description. While it is not a "lodge", in Island Park, Idaho (near West Yellowstone, Montana) one can stay in rental cabins directly in front of a very reliable kite spot. The terrain is basically flat with a few terrain features. The wind here is ve...

Beartooth Mountains – Snowkite Nirvana

Memorial Day weekend I arrived at the gate below the Beartooth Summit, a day before the road officially opened. The snow was rotten from so much warm weather. That first night it rained. Then it froze and snowed. Four inch thick rain crust was my first day of kiting. Not the best conditions but at ...
