I'd say the best thing is starting with a kite that drifts well as-is. I find you end up fighting a bad drifting kite in the waves, but a kite that drifts well mostly stays out of your way and lets you focus more on the wave. Not everyone at the beach is a kiter. I'd prefer to self land than have a non-kiter attempt to grab my kite incorrectly (which is often the case) causing more issues.

Are we supposed to guess your board type, weight, etc?

Make sure to practice in lower wind or with a spotter the first couple of times you try it just to make sure you have a feel for it.

It is super easy to self land using the core bar. Walk up the center line to the V and yank the top line to land the kite. Seems less convenient to screw around with a non-core bar with your core kite.

You'll float yes, but the swim will be inefficient.
