Re: More wings, the hard way?

Yes Tom, you got it exactly. Layup is what you make it, either pre cut many layers with different sized piece or just concentrate on the outer layer and fill the mold. No foam anymore DU just carbon , first wings were 20 oz biax skin and then 20 and 8 oz uni inside. Yes Blackrat you would think so, ...

20180205_172313.jpg 20180205_185323.jpg 20180206_073809.jpg The molds are a bit flimsy but I think with a hot coat and some work I can get them stiff and shining. I will probably make a quick and dirty wing first though. The wings took a lot to build but this mold build was pretty darn easy Carbon ...

Re: More wings, the hard way?

Wow! Not a comment, addition or anything, I'm pouring my guts out, for years, every hard won tip that I can share.. I always hope I reach at least one interested builder. Oh well here's more The wings are close enough , sanded to 220 ,waxed and covered with hairspray , my new favorite mold release. ...

More wings, the hard way?

I decided to try some medium sized all around kiting wings, maybe windsurfing too! These are about 580 an 680 cm2. I tried something new with the formica templates, just one positive piece instead of top and bottom negative templates. It worked well enough and saved some time for sure. I'm still jus...

Here is a slightly complicated mold that is still quite versatile.

Re: Another DIY foil

Kosta, thank you for sharing your observations of wing specifics. I have been waiting a long time to hear such relevant notes on observed foil designs(pg 3) from someone other than myself on this forum. The subtleties of what makes a hydrofoil behave nicely are very elusive indeed. I feel profiles a...

Re: Hydrofoil lift in different water temperature /salinity

The answer to the first post is YES.

Huge difference !

Salt , debris, sediment ,temperature, and who knows what else, make an obvious difference in foil performance.

Re: Effect of Different Epoxies

I think epoxy stiffness matters and varies greatly. Brittle, stiff and breakable or pliable and rubbery...hmmm I have built entire foils out of RR, US composites and West. Foil profiles and subtle geometry differences seem to matter more than strut and wing stiffness. There is a brand from Soller co...

Re: Big wings

I decided to use my foam models instead of fiddling with my molds for another week 20171009_161122.jpg I discovered masking tape for handling this 20oz cloth on a bias (45°). 20171009_162843.jpg It is difficult to wrap the leading edge especially with 20oz. I used transfer tape on Kevlar on a bias t...

Re: Big wings

Ha! I didn't really hypothesize it, I sanded and filled my wing for hours last year. Spotz 2 front wing is that way. The moses rear stab I liked seemed to have a very different profile root to tip. E212 came to me through browsing the comparison tool on airfoiltools.com I don't read all the scientif...
