Re: kitesurfing self rescue questions

Yeah, I guess that's true in most cases. In my case the lines were already tangled when I got to the kite so flagging it out was a bit uncertain. I guess you can cautiously grab one line to see if it will behave, and be prepared to let it go again, but if the kite is doing weird things, deflating it...

Re: kitesurfing self rescue questions

With regard to the don't deflate the kite thing, that applies in almost all situations, but not always. Last week we had a gusty strong day with slightly offshore winds. I chose to windsurf that day since it looked like not-so good kite weather. A guy was getting overpowered lofted/teabagged etc, an...

Re: How to kite in a hurricane!!

No worries Adams, lots of guys learned without lessons. Your situation probably was common a number of years ago, but it doesn't fit with the situation for many guys on the forum now. If you're smart, and respect, even fear, the power of the kite, if you have huge room, no other kiters or bystanders...

Re: Fixing a broken strap insert?

Sorry for the confusion. The penny is 19mm across. The base of the insert, measuring across flat to flat is probably about 17mm, but I can't seem to find my inserts at the moment. Time to clean up the workshop! So the hole for these would be just under 2cm, not 1cm as I guessed before, but not as bi...

Re: Fixing a broken strap insert?

I think I was replying while the last post was being written. Yes, I would drop an new insert in on top of the old insert if it is a shallower insert. If you go to snowboardmaterials.com and look in the snowboard section, they do have shallower inserts used in snowboards. Drilling out the remaining ...

Re: Fixing a broken strap insert?

With a little luck you've never been happy with the strap placement and would like to put a new insert in right near (next to) the old one. Pulling the insert apart must take some doing. I suspect it was not put together well, and maybe heavy tightening of a bottomed out out screw helped to force it...

Re: Fixing a broken strap insert?

When I and many other board builders use these inserts we just make a big hole, bit enough for the base, and fill in around it. In the days of windsurfer construction we would bever do that, but there's no problem with doing that on a kiteboard. Attached is a picture, if I've done this right. The co...

Re: Fixing a broken strap insert?

What kind of epoxy did you use? That tube stuff is crap, you have to use a real liquid epoxy resin. I build boards for myself and a few friends, and I have to say I've never seen "inserts" like that. Those are a joke! (what kind of board?) If you have another board to ride for a while and can wait, ...

Re: Kite Surfing for my Son

My son has ridden a 2006 7m Waroo in very light wind on skis. He was 10 at the time. In light winds, no problem. But yes, the bar travel thing is an issue. The hook length, chicken loop size, and lack of length in the torso meaning he can't lean forward to add bar travel all reduce the ability to tr...
