I bought a Roush skimboard and then had it customized a bit - great board. Skimboarding takes some getting used to but really fun when it's mushy out or low winds.

Agreed that a good instructor will save you money and time in the long run. At least find someone who knows what they are doing to teach you if you aren't going to pay for them. Definitely for your weight and the lower winds in SD, you'd want a big kite.

You mentioned a DVD - they do help the learning curve. The Way to Fly is a good one as well as Real's Zero to Hero.
