I know that yachts square TE's of their foils to reduce vibration but I don't think this would work for a kite foil. Is this the main wing you are talking of? could be a bad profile shape...

Simplest way to understand is they are there mainly to stop twisting. putting them further away from the 'twisting axis' reduces the stress / will be more rigid.
I'm sure the pretty weave cloth is only used on the outside for looks. Mine was mostly Unidirectional with +-45 Deg layers near the outside where they are more effective.
