Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

You can talk about pretty much anything you like in a patent abstract and disclosure. But the only thing that's "patented" is what you outline in the claims. The 9789935 patent has only three independent claims, and they're bizarrely specific. For example, claim 1 requires that the profile of the ma...

Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

Bluntly copying a design is immoral, even if done with different materials and I wouldn’t buy one mainly on moral grounds. Here's a related question just for fun... Let's say you have a company that uses the "give away the razor to sell the blades" business model. Would you consider it immoral if o...

Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

I understand that completely - and I commend you. That's how the state of the art moves forward. I've done that with many things myself. But in my opinion there's a spectrum between 100% novelty and outright copies. Being inspired by something and choosing to improve it, even very significantly, fal...

Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

Even if it is not patented, if you 1 to 1 copy the design without permission, it is still theft (legal of not)... I disagree, but now we're down to arguing about definitions. ...and should not be encouraged by the consumer. I'm less inclined to get into that debate. I will say that I've never bough...

Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

It is bad to bluntly copy somebody work or to steal something. It's fine to say that it's "bad" to copy someone's work. But it's all too common to accuse people of stealing others' designs. If it's not patented, and there's no contract or NDA in place, it's not stealing. I'm not suggesting it's not...

Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

To me it looks like the same foil with a different board.

Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

I'm thinking maybe that was too much of a screaming deal (or a typo). It's now listed at $949 rather than $499...

Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

Personally I think $499 for a complete FoilFish is a screaming deal. I thought it was a pretty damn good deal when I bought mine 2 years ago for $1000.

Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

Well I guess I can't say for sure what material the Foilfish or AstroRock boards are. I always thought the AstroRock was epoxy/glass. I once damaged it and fixed it with epoxy glass. It held perfectly for years. I had a couple of older Bic boards that were definitely plastic. The Astro Rock was defi...

Re: Chinese KB Hydrofoil : 300 USD + shipment

I don't think the seam is an indication that it's not epoxy glass. It's just an indication of the manufacture process. I've seen many things that are epoxy/glass or carbon with an identical seam. I had an old Bic Astro Rock that had a seam just like that, and I'm pretty sure it was epoxy/glass over ...
