We are planning a vacation in the second half of August. Our family - two adults in their forties and two daughters 18 and 20 - want to start kitesurfing.

So far we just played with a stunt kite.

We would like to take a week of the total immersion kiteboarding lessons not further than 4-6 hours flight from California.

Does anybody have any suggestion for such a place? All schools I saw on the web offer very introductory lessons while we are looking for 5-6 days of instruction to bring us to the level where we can start enjoying sport on our own.

Thanks for all your input,

Bad idea. The last two weeks in August are the least reliable for wind anywhere in the US. Sea breeze is leaving and winter fronts have yet to come. Leave the country or change your plans to July. You could get lucky, but don't count on it.

Try Oahu at Kailua Beach Park.

might want to try South Padre Island Kiteboarding on South Padre Island. Contact Phillip Money; great guy, is right in the water and has a chase boat. water is warm, flat and shallow! I'm sure you could work out some sore of customized wk long family deal. His tel # is 956-761-1434 and email is windcorp@worldnet.att.net. About 40min drive from the Harlingen airport.

Might also try Jeff at KiteWindSurf. He is located across the street from Alameda Crown Beach in Alameda CA. Might want to t/w him about the potential of a customized family wk deal and also the possibilty of doing the Delta (Rio Vista). He can be reached on 510-917-6064...his shop # is on the website KiteWindSurf.com.

Bye the way if you go to Hatteras, August is in season ; expensive and crowded...also a 2+ hr drive from Norfolk....but a great kitesurf setup
