For those who still do both, what do you think? I started to reminisce looking at windsurfing photos recently.
Of Course most of you will say 'No Way' since this is a forum for die-hard kiters.
But out in the surf, Is a windsurfer more comfortable and more versatile for moves in the waves ? Plus jump height and tricks can be terrific.
Above 20-25 knots I don't think kiting allows increasing jump height, hangtime or tricks. And it gets gustier meaning less comfortable, more survival plus way harder on the body.
I guess the only way to tell, is try it again. I wonder if it will feel like sailing a steam liner.

When I explain the difference between kiteboarding and windsurfing to 'non-boardsports types'... that is generally what I tell them. 30 knots 'average wind' or more and I usually don't go out anyway, and yet the windsurfers are loving it.

Well it depends if you can windsurf or not.
To be competent enough to go out in 30+ knots on a sailboard requires a fair bit of experience.
i don't think someone with less than 5 years on a sailboard would have fun in 30knots

(Paddle in) surfing in perfect 6 to 8 ft with slight offshore wind with a few friends, snowboarding in waistdeep fresh powder through the trees with blue sky above, windsurfing in half to mast high waves with a perfect 25-35 knot sideshore, kiting for every other condition, skateboarding behind my friends bike or scooter or down a perfectly paved 15 deg incline late night with a full moon.. for me that is the order.. The beauty of kiting is that you can do it everywhere there is water and a bit of wind. It gets me out on the water way more than the old days of surf and windsurf; And, as I tell my friends who don't do it, 'it's like wakeboarding behind a helicopter AND I get to fly the copter!' .. but I am preaching to the choir here..
I do question whether Naish would honestly say the same thing again tho about Kiting waves. Times have changed since he made that statement. Kiting rocks in the waves!
To each his own. My take is definitely get out on the windsurfer if the conditions are right.

Windsurfing in 25knots+ with 12ft waves is killer.
I am a die hard kitesurf but a few days a year the windsurf conditions go off, and I bring out the flat 5.0 and the wave board. A 25ft endo is still one of the sickest moves on the water, and an off the lip with a windsurfer is amazing.
Try it next time you can't hang on to your 7meter kite fully depowered.
