There has been a recent accident in temperate latitudes (no where near the tropics or subtropics), involving several kiteboarders that were lofted in a sudden storm event.
All suffered fractures and other injuries requiring hospitalization. One person was paralyzed as a result of major factures.
Dangerous storms, squalls, water spouts, whatever ARE NOT solely a Florida phenomena as some fools have alledged on a few occassions.
WHEREVER YOU RIDE, STUDY THE WEATHER FORECAST AND MONITOR THE WEATHER CONTINOUSLY.
PRACTICE TOTALLY DEPOWERING BOTH MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY TO TRY TO REDUCE REACTION TIME.
TOTALLY DEPOWER EARLY, DON'T TRY TO FLY OUT OF IT OR WAIT UNTIL THE EMERGENCY IS FULLY UPON YOU
No areas or riders from PRO to newbie are totally exempt from unstable weather, believe it. Frequency of such storms will vary with location but most areas do have them over time so stay aware.
More about these sad accidents will be posted in time but for now, think carefully about this post and act upon it.
More about weather planning and monitoring at the links below. If you are new seek quality instruction from a certified instructor. Suggestions to think about in selecting an instructor appear at the link below. If you are serious about kiteboarding you should read them:
