Packing Kites

Postby Kite Adventures » Wed Feb 22, 2006 5:27 pm

So, here's the best way I've found to pack kites.
You use packing wrap, similar to saran, you can use saran, but you need to just pull it very tight as you go around...
We can fit 5 kites, 2 boards, 2 harnesses, 2 impact vests AND 2 helmets.
Check it!

That's pretty cool. How much does it weigh?

I've found my Deceiver bag can fit way more than 50lbs worth of goods, which is where the airlines get bitchy...

We've never had a problem national or internationally!
70 lbs maybe???

they just mark it as heavy, but we've never had to pay extra.

I would say a kite has about 6kg weight. 6x5=30kg
2 boards each 3kg = 6kg
Accessories 10 kg...

so it gets quiet heavy, about 45 kg.

When I had 2 boards and 3-4 kites with me and accessories I had 40-50kg.
Very heavy.

And lots of airlines will cause trouble...specially teh charter airlines...e.g. Martinair charges 30 Euro per KG !!!
20 kg free, Surfboard 80 Euro with up to 20 or 30kg...

And they don't discuss...

Just had to do extensive weighing of kite gear to fly in a small private plane where we were counting every pound. 14m and 17m kites were 9.5 pounds each. 10m kite was 6.5 pounds. The kite bags added another 2.5 to 3.5 pounds each.

Cool! But fit them where?

I've had good luck using these bags...

I can even get two kites into one of the jumbo bags.

The vack bags work great, you can get them anywhere, Costco has a verity pack. Pull the little rubber valve out and use your kite pump to suck the air out. Weight is no problem, get a Dakine BTS, one big heavy bag to the airport and zip in half to check in. 7 kites, 4 bars, 2 boards, and all gear inc wetsuit.

Garbage bags and vacum cleaner packs everything very small.
